Hi,

I'm looking to replace the standard kit lens with it and would use it as a primary wide angle also using it for Milkyway pictures so something as fast as I can afford would be even better.

For Milky way, you want as wide and as fast as possible. The reason is, the maximum amount of time you can leave the shutter open without getting blurring or streaking in the stars is a function of the focal length. For a 24mm on a crop sensor, that is approximately 500/(24 x 1.6), or around 13 seconds. f2.8 might not let in enough light to get good images.

I like my Sigma 20mm f1.4 for MW, and my 16-35 f2.8 does pretty well, also. But that's on a full-frame body, so I can leave the shutter open upwards of 25-30 seconds.
Do you really want a zoom? Sounds like those Tamron primes mentioned earlier might work well for you.

The original Tamron 24-70 is a great lens and still available for under $1000, the Canon f/4L would be my second choice in that price range.

Better start looking at www.DoXmark.com to see the chracteristics of your lens choice and compaire it with the Canon 24-70 f2.8 L II and you will see what you are paying for. Shapness is one of the main issue in a lens and tamron have a sharpness issue at 35mm to 50mm. Finally you do not need a expensive lens to take good photos. Unless you are a reporter or serious profesional in the midle of the jungle you will not need a expensive lens.

You might look at the Sigma 17-50 f2.8. It's designed for a crop sensor camera and does a really nice job.

Indeed, I have had a 17-50 sigma f/2.8 on my D7100 and currently on my 80D - they perform very well. At below $400.00 it is a bargain.

https://www.the-digital-picture.com/ Check out this site for reviews on Canon and other lenses in the range you seek. I like you are are a limited budget and have spent many hours on this site for research. Currently these are the 3 lenes on my radar.
EF-s 15-85mm 3.5-5.6 IS USM
EF-S 10-22mm 3.5-4.5 IS USM
EF-S 70-300mm 4.5-5.6mm IS USM II
According to reviews these are very good performing lenes, not L glass but in some cases they get pretty close. Also the 17-55mm 2.8 is nearly as good as an L glass lens. The site also is not limited to Canon lenses they also review Nikon and a host of third party lenses. Hope this helps in your search.

Not sure about the price of the Tamron but Sigma makes a 17-70 that will fit a T6i, have it for my T4i, works very well, bit heavy though, Bob.

If you want a new 24-70 f/2.8 that's the price of admission. The Canon version, without stabilization, is currently on sales for $1750 making the Tamron version a bargain by comparison. However, Canon also makes a 24-70 f/4 for $900 which is also a very fine lens.

I rather like the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 .......24 not wide enough on crop frame for me. The full frame 24-70's are somewhat wasteful on crop cameras.

I recently bought that lens through Greentoe for $1050, and have to say it's one of the nicest lenses I own. I have used it on my FF Canon 5D MKII as well as my crops, (7D MKII & 80D) and find the IQ superb on both. It has become one of my most used lenses and my advice to you is save your $$$ until you can afford this wonderful piece of glass, as it will make your T6i sing.
