Hello fellow Uglies:

I am pre-planning a photography vacation to the Banff, Jasper National Park area in Alberta, Canada, hopefully for late September or early October, 2018, and asking fellow UHHers for some insight. There is a wealth of info on the web, but I would like to get the opinions of those of you who have visited this area (or live nearby), as to the 'can't miss' autumn scenics, best areas to photograph wildlife, best hiking trails, a good 'base camp' to leave from each morning, best hotel(s) and/or campground(s) for a travel trailer. Not sure if I want to fly into Calgary and rent a vehicle or pull a travel trailer. I'm tentatively planning a 7-10 day visit. Also, is there anything I need to be aware of (ex - 'remember your passport', 'know your km to mph conversions, etc.)?

Thank you in advance for your replies!

As others have mentioned, the photo guides by Darwin Wiggett contain a wealth of information. They are indispensable for a trip to Banff/Jasper.

If you find yourself in Calgary, consider spending an extra day for a trip out to Drumheller. Its about an hours drive or so to the east of Calgary.
There is a museum there that is well worth a visit.

This is one impressive museum. Not to be missed if you have the slightest interest in dinosaurs.

You have shared a lot of great images, Fayle! I especially like your 'reflection' photos. Thanks!

Take your time on the Icefields Parkway. Around every bend is a new stunning view. Spend very little time in the town of Banff. Visit Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. Use Jasper as a home base for most of your walks/hikes.

Because most travel in these parks takes place along the valley floors your altitude is never very high. On average just 5 or 6000 feet ASL so temperatures in September/October are still very comfortable during the day.

You get pretty high when you pass the Columbia glacier in Jasper. We camped in the campground right near it October 2016 and it got below freezing at night.

We had to forgo Lake Louise last October because there was nowhere to park. It might have been some Canadian holiday weekend. The whole place was a zoo of day trippers.

True, the restaurant across from the glacier is at 6500 feet ASL

If it was in October it may have been Thanksgiving weekend.

Jasper has more scenic views than Banff. Where ever you go, there are pictures to take. It's well worth the time to go all the way from the southern end to the north ( but take your time No need to rush.) Have fun or should I say "enjoy"! Personally I think it's the most beautiful park any where for scenery.

Banff and Jasper National Parks are not the only ones in that area. There are the contiguous national parks of Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Yoho, as well as Mount Robson, Mount Assiniboine and Hamber provincial parks. I really liked Kootenay's Marble Canyon. And then there is Muncho Lake, and...

We were there last summer in the height of tourist season. Buses full of foreign tourists. No place to park at any of the special sites. It may be better if you go in September or October. Forest fires really diminished our view of Icefields. All and all not our best trip. Wish you luck.
