I'll be in Kauai in early-mid march. What can I expect to find available for photography there? Plants? Animals? Landscapes? Astronomy?

What kind of lenses should I pack?

Thanks in advance!

Beautiful Island!

Landscapes, seascapes, waterfalls, flowers. Great skies at night if you have the equipment. Not a whole lot of animals. I strongly recommend a helicopter ride for beautiful aerials. Waimea Canyon is known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Lens choice really depends on how you approach these subjects. Definitely have polarizers for any lens you take to really bring out the colors and the sky.

Favorites for me are sunrises and sunsets (depending upon where you'll be staying). If you're near the water, they're always spectacular with colorful clouds and reflections. Plants and flowers are plentiful. Some of the old towns have quaint buildings. The Kilauea Lighthouse is good, and there are lots of interesting birds there. You'll find there's no lack for photo ops anywhere on the island. You might even research a book on things to see for other ideas.

I should also mention it's fun to have an underwater camera for snorkeling and/or water outings. I have a little Olympus that I got just for that but have found it takes great pics out of the water, too. As to lenses, it depends on what you want to shoot and what you own. I'd go with a good landscape lens and a zoom for other things. Don't forget extras like batteries, memory cards, and maybe a tripod if you have room.

Hope this helps. Have fun.

Mid March....If you are lucky and they are still around, you may see humpback whales. Look for them at the Kilauea lighthouse.
Tara fields on the north and northeast side.
River boat ride and Grotto on the Wailua River.
Smith Gardens and Luau Dinner/Show. Located at the mouth of the Wailua River and Kuhio Hwy.
Rent a car. It is a small island. The longest drive is about 70 miles.
The airport at Lihue is about the half way point on the above drive.
Look for the Tree Tunnel. Southwest area.
On the west side, you may wonder what happened to paradise. West side is the dry side of the island.
Send me a postcard!!
Pat

Just got back from Kauai six months ago after 11 years of residing there. The first thing I would do is schedule a boat ride to the Napili coast. It is a little late in the season but you should be able to catch some whale watching as well as have the opportunity for some stunning coastline photography. Leave from the north shore as the trip is not nearly as arduous. You should also be ready for rainbows you will see them in Kauai more commonly than any other islands of Hawaii. If you like tropical flowers/plants they have two places with walking tours. One is in Poipu (southside) and the other is on the north shore past Princeville. I highly suggest a helicopter tour over Waimea canyon as you will get great
photo opportunities. You will have a grand time.

We did a "doors off" helicopter flight with a pilot who knew photography. Pricey, but worth every cent.

Aren’t there Orchid gardens in Kauai? In Poipu? I had the intention of going there one year but sat for many hours taking pictures of sea turtles instead. While you’re there look up “Puka Dog”. Best hot dogs on the planet. And the only Puka Dog on the planet! Enjoy!

Kauai is the best island for photos....hands down...
My recommendations -did all these things - Doors off Heli, boattrip to the Napal'i coast, lighthouse, for beach relaxation - Poipu beach (surf, seals, sunset) - dont bother driving up to Kee beach unless you are doing the Napali boat trip. too crowded, no parking (good snorkeling however), Wailua falls (repel to the base if you dare!)....and FOR SURE, take a day or 2 to drive up to the top of Napali coast range via route 550.

Ditto to everybody's comments - don't forget Hanalei Bay. IMHO, the helicopter tour (no doors, of course) is a not to miss thing. This is a view of the Na Pali coast taken with my D70 on that tour (January 2005). Have a great trip!!!

Worth a trip: the Queen's Bath on the lava ledge under Princeville. You park in a neighborhood and walk down. But be alert to high surf. Rogue waves have swept people out to sea.

These shots are not the Bath itself but just east of it. This 16-year old girl was jumping in to the cauldron (by herself) and allowing the waves to "elevator" back up. We talked to her and learned her big brothers had taught her "the ropes" and she was completely confident about enjoying it alone.

(Shot with a Canon P&S so not great quality.)

The big sandy beach at Polihale in the west, at the southern end the NaPali cliffs, can be interesting it big surf is still running.
