I wanna trade up on some of my camera bodies. Unfortunately though, Money $$$ is a major concern. Currently, I have a Canon 7D, which is in good shape, a little scuffing on the body, but the images are still great. I am not sure of the shutter count. I have a friend who will give me $350 for it in cash. Then again, I have a Canon 5D mk i. It too is in good shape. I am not sure what I can get for it, maybe another $350. Finally, and this one is the keeper, a new 70D.

I don’t need 3 Camera bodies and want to get rid of the first 2, but...I want a full frame and crop one too. I have done a little reading and by specs, I like the Canon EOS 6D.

So, my plan is to sell the 7D and 5D, to help finance the 6D.

What do you think about my logic, such as it is?

It's fine logic, the 70D and 6D are both fine cameras, and you can only work within your budget constraints.

Why not just shoot what you have and forget about the gear-buying-treadmill?

Perhaps because it makes a lot more sense to do so in the digital world than it did with film?

My film cameras get a new sensor with every roll of film. That's not the case with digital, and it does make a difference. Chasing every new innovation or new model clearly doesn't make sense, but periodic and carefully chosen updates, say 3 to 5 years or so, does make sense.

I work in the tech industry, and am typically a Luddite/laggard, but judicious updates are not only a good thing but essential. The OP's suggestions seem good to me.

Sure, upgrading makes sense if his camera isnt doing something that he’s repeatedly wanted it to do but he didn’t say that that was the case. Also, from my experience on the ‘hog, folks just have g.a.s. and aren't really solving a problem.

Selling gear to finance GAS is very logical in my opinion, regardless if you need it or not. It scratches an itch.

So, firstly the OP would like to upgrade. If that's what he wants to do, then who are we to reason why?

The 6D is a reasonable upgrade from a 5D mk 1, at least in megapixels, which may have an impact on his results. AF points up to 11 from 9, so not that much of a big deal, but the tech does advance significantly between 2005 and 2012.

I'm very conservative in terms of tech upgrades, I work in the tech industry and frequently get stuff for free or low cost, but I tend to shy away from the leading or bleeding edge of the curve. After five years I've just acquired an 80D to take over from my T3i. They're both good cameras, and leaders in their time frame/market, but the difference between the 80D and the T3i is very noticeable. The cost was essentially identical. Is that GAS, or is it just good old time religion?

I don't / didn't have a problem with my T3i, but the 80D can do things that the T3i can't, and some of those are things that I wish to do.

Indeed it is GAS that is motivating me. However, the specs on the 6D are impressive. The Sensor is a significant upgrade, not only in ISO, but IQ. The mega pixels are almost twice those on the 5D. AND it has WiFi and GPS. Granted I may never use the WiFi, but it is nice to have the option.

Well..I asked the OP for one thing. I wanted to hear what he had to say.

I dont' care if he does or not but I wanted to know why he felt like his perfectly good cameras weren't hacking it.

I'll leave all of you to this thread. Have a good day.

Sir, please read my direct reply to one of your comments. But, to be a little more in-your-face, I like the newer tech offered with 6D. The others bodies work fine, but as I stated in my OP I don’t kneed 3 Camera bodies.

OK, but you challenge someone, and then run away? You're not actually helping the OP with any useful information.

Unless the OP tells us differently, he wants to do the upgrade, and there are many reasons why the OP's suggestions makes a lot of sense.

Just because a piece of equipment may not disappoint doesn't mean that something newer may not open up new opportunities that addresses the OP's desires.

You do great work, but you're going backwards with technology and film. Why are you qualified to advise?

Opps I posted this to the wrong Commentor: Indeed it is GAS that is motivating me. However, the specs on the 6D are impressive. The Sensor is a significant upgrade, not only in ISO, but IQ. The mega pixels are almost twice those on the 5D. AND it has WiFi and GPS. Granted I may never use the WiFi, but it is nice to have the option. Also, since I DL directly from my camera, (Bad experience with a CF Card) I have found that the 5D does not play well with The EOS Utility App.

I think it makes fine sense (especially if it makes sense to YOU). My observations:
time to trade/sell the 5D MK1. 12year old technology and 12MP
$350 seems a little low for the 7D -I would be thinking more like $400-$450 (depending on condition)
The 6D is not built to the rugged standards of the 7D or 5D -does that matter to you?
The 6D is a big improvement in resolution over the 5D and a big improvement in high ISO/low noise over the 7D
The 6D is excellent for landscapes/portraits/etc. sports/action is not its strong suit - fairly slow fps and limited AF capability
