OK we don't think bokeh is important. A whole generation of filmmakers use bokeh often in their productions.
Just keep watching the next time you watch your favorite serial shows on netflix or HBO.
Bokeh is a beautiful look. A lot of the nature shots on this forum feature the bird and bokeh
takes out the background in a smear of colors. It is really important for creative work.

Hey “gray beard” thanks for the humor with my morning coffee. Some people just take themselves too seriously.

Bokeh is a very specific term that has to do with the quality of out of focus areas, particularly highlights. It has been a buzzword for a while now and is often misused. While I find it pleasing sometimes, it is far overused and too much emphasis has been put on it. In short it has become overrated marketing hype.

At the same time, BAD bokeh is distracting.

It’s best when bokeh is not noticeable to the average person. Viewers should focus on the subject. If they think, “Wow, cool patterns in the background!”, then you have failed to communicate - - - UNLESS bokeh is the message!

My senility shows again. All I see in lens reviews is "quality of bokeh" (or alternate spelling). It means background. But background is just that, background. Bokah is something special. In fact, it seems to have overtaken foreground, or subject of the photo, and it no longer matters what is central and in focus, what matters is Bokah!! In fact many old lenses that were sitting on shelves collecting dust have found new life because it has been discovered they have great Bokah! The lens itself was completely unaware of this fact most of its life but now it has been elevated in value from virtual nothing to ever increasing amounts. (BTW, I have a Pentagon 50mm F1.8 who the experts say has fantastic Bokah! Wanna buy it for a thousand bucks)? So photography has gone all the way from focusing on the subject and blurring or just ignoring the background, to ignoring what is in focus and getting orgasmic over the Bokah! So what am I missing here? Feel free to insult me, I have a thick skin.
My senility shows again. All I see in lens reviews... (show quote)

I hope so, since few of my pictures are ever in focus. Does sound can occur when no one is there to hear or record them? We'll never know.

Here on the 7th page, I see a certain softened fuzziness with gentle haloing on the back of my brain. By God! I've internalized bokeh!

I read the article. I didn't see any birds or flowers. All I saw was Bokah! I am trying to adjust to this new world of ours where I must ignore the sharp, in focus subjects of the foreground and give my total attention, and pay artistic homage to, the background. Er, excuse me the Bokah!!

I was surprised to see that the majority of the examples centered the object (broke the rule of thirds). The may be why your eyes wandered so much. Most lenses with wide apertures are not sharpest at maximum aperature. Usually better 2 stops down. Minor loss,in Bokeh but sharper image. Max aperture should be reserved for low light and usually not close ups. Just one man’s opinion. I agree that Bokeh is an over done topic just like the latest hat opic “lens breathing”.

To me bokeh is just one of the techniques to create a context for the image's messsage. Flower example: background leaves: sharp, blurred, indistinct - each adds to the message in its own way. So what the photographer chooses defines the message of the image. The bokeh I dislike is that which shows the diaphram geometry.

Back to the subject? The subject was NOT the definition or appreciation of BOKEH! but rather the absurdity of the present obsession with it. Just to clarify.

In Japanese, the source of the term "bokeh", "boka" (pronounced like "bokah") means "protection against fires." Not sure why the choice to use the "ah" spelling. And "bokeh" is pronounced somewhat like "bo" [long "o"] - kay [with a shortened long "a"]. Let's not confuse a confusing term even more by promoting an incorrect spelling or pronunciation. My suggestion: why not simply make your point -- that bokeh is overused and made more important than it should be -- without introducing a weird spelling?
Just trying to be helpful, not anal, here.

P.S. You might need some boka when people start being incendiary with you. :-)

The bokeh concept is how our brains function when processing visual info - the brain really "sees" in-focus only a part of a scene we look at, all the rest is sort of ignored or blurred, akin to bokey-pokey.
The harder we concentrate on something, the bigger the effect.
Or when you're completely stoned it can become total bokeh...........or so I'm told...........
