My wife (E-M5Mk2) and I (D810) are planning a trip to Namibia of a week to 10 days this coming November. I’d be interested in any advice regarding photo venues, tour operators, accommodations, etc. We have been advised to hire a vehicle and drive ourselves around the countryside. Comments welcomed and appreciated.

If you dont already know, there is a Cheetah Conservation Facility (hospital, Reserve etc) in Namibia that is worth a stop and tour. The director Laurie Marker is a world famous Cheetah researcher.

We are heading to Namibia ourselves this may. We used Celeste Le Roux from Rhino Africa for our trip planning. We are driving ourselves for most of the trip and are heading out to Sossuvlei, damaraland, Kaokoland, Skeleton Coast. We are not doing the normal safari activity up near Etosha because we did 3 weeks of safari last year and wanted to get into remote regions on this trip. We are mostly staying at Wilderness Safari lodges. We have also travelled to Africa with And Beyond as our trip planner. They did a great job as well - we did not use them for this trip because they only have one lodge in Namibia. Good luck! Namibia is photography paradise.

My wife and I went to Namibia three years ago using a tour company (OAT). We had a great time, and had plenty of time available for photo ops as virtually everyone (12) on the trip was a photographer. During the three-week trip we noticed hundreds of private-drive vehicles at many locations--couples, families with children, older folk. We saw camping facilities in several very out-of-the-way locations. Many of the private excursions vehicles had South African plates and the logos of South African rental companies. I would suggest your do a Google search for rental vehicles for a Namibia safari. I suspect you will find lots of choices.

Don't miss spending time in the Namibia desert in the south, the coast and especially Etosha NP. Namibia is a photographer's paradise. The sunrises and sunsets are spectacular. Earl

Thanks very much for this. We are still in the investigating stage but I’ll contact Rhino Africa for information. Also very interested in your comments about the operator when you return. (Imagine@Paskowitz.CA). Best regards for a safe and amazing trip. Jerry

Thanks very much Earl. We are still in the investigation stage of the trip We have found quite a few self-drive options and are considering that. We did the tour group thing with Pangolin in Botswana in 2016 and it was OK, but not really good. Jerry

We have been twice with Wild dog tours , they do group, private and self drive (easy in Namibia) fabulous country, great people, wonderful company we would use them every time. Entosha first stop, dead Vlei, skeleton coast wild life is abundant and up close. I never needed more than a 300mm lens , would love to go back

Namib Desert is special.

If you want to go to one of the most remote parts of the Kalahari Desert and spend time with the San (Bushmen) People I can refer you to a private guide. These are hunter gatherers living much as they were in the movie in the 70s "The Gods Must be Crazy." I've been with this guide two times. The last time I put together a trip for friends. He's quite well known and was a guide for a couple named Brad and Angelina. You may have heard of them....tho he had not. He was raised by these people and knows them well. You could never go there without a guide or really good 4 wheel drive. Id think most places you want to go you can self drive, though you will miss seeing a lot of animals, if of interest.
