The most unusual cold for eastern NC, 3 this morning at 0700, has brought a lot of traffic to my feeders. I have been out shooting and experimenting with my new D 850, which I have only had for a few weeks, and am leaving for Costa Rica in 10 days. I was hoping to get some practice in before leaving, and this weather has been just the ticket.
Very nice! Have a great trip.
Some nice shots there.
Did you mention (didn't see) which lens(es)?

All very nice shots Mike. I take it you are enjoying the new D850. Enjoy your trip and take many pictures. I am a little disappointed that there are no downloads though so we can see just how sharp these are.

excellent shots! love the light on some of those tiny birds. what lens and settings?
I'm using the Nikon 300PF lens with a Nikon 1.4 tele. Sorry about no downloads, new to the whole system. Trust me, they are very sharp. I've been experimenting, and thanks to Steve Perry, I've found I have needed to up my shutter speed to 3200 handheld. With lots of light, no issue. Most are at F 8, some at F 5.6. Auto ISO, ranging up to 2000. I've tried with VR off, and found it to be not as good as VR on.
You were able to get a lot of the sun directly on the bird where detail can be properly illuminated. Some show bird pictures entirely in the shadow limiting detail & color. I wish everyone would mention the lens, f-stop, the shutter speed & if a tripod was used. Most any camera would produce the same pictures. If some special feature was used of the camera it should be mentioned to justify the body used to gain some feature it has (to justify the $$$ spent). Or shoot some of the same pictures if possible with another previous lens to see if you gained anything that only a side by side shot shows. .
I wasn’t aware I needed to justify my decision to make a purchase. Lenses that I did not like have long left the building. I have pictures of most all of these birds made with my D 750, same lens. I shot these to get practice with the D 850 before I was in a situation, Costa Rica, where I was shooting for keeps. In my opinion, and that’s the one that counts, these shots are a step up from the D 750, particularly in the speed of the AF, as well as the size of the pic after significant cropping. That was the main reason I bought.
IMHO, you are ready for the trip.
Wonderful images. Have a great trip and bring back lots of photos.
