go to vanguard direct, I just ordered a monopod that has a 3 leg base. Havn't received it yet.

Those 3 leg feet can be bought seperately. I have an old (70’s) Aluminum Miida monopod that has those “feet”. Seldom used them as they were just a gimmick that weren’t all that effective.

Be careful picking a walking stick/trekking pole for travel. If the end is "sharp and pointy" it may not make it past security.

you will save a lot of trouble my putting the pod in your check in bag. you won't need it on the plane and you don't have to worry about it breaking.

I use a Manfrotto 679. I was concerned about taking it on an airplane. A friend of mine and i discussed the issue and resolved the concerns in a rather unique manner. Using my engineering background, I designed what looks like a very custom made cane top which fastens to the monopod. My friend owns a machine shop and "whittled" a very classy looking handle. When I've had to travel with it, I fasten the cane handle to it, adjust the length, and use it to "aid" my walking. I place it on the conveyor to pass through x-ray, and "hobble" to the other end to retrieve it. Once on the plane, it collapses to 24" and fits in the overhead quite nicely.

I have a Manfrotto 681B but prefer my 3 Legged Thing CF monopod as it is lighter & shorter when collapsed.

Quite creative. Are people finding that monopods are being disallowed on planes? (If so, is it just a carry-on restriction?)

I would like to purchase a collapsible Mono-pod that I can carry in my airline overhead bag that would be suitable for my Sony A6300 fitted with the Sony 100-400 telephoto lens. I need it to be light as possible with sufficient height to get to eye level with camera. I have been doing a bit of research on it and have seen some with small "feet", ball heads, etc. I think a tilt function would help when photographing birds and flowers. Having had both shoulders repaired /replaced, I am trying to take the weight of them. I have looked at Monofort, Really Right Stuff etc. but now have need to listen to those who have experience with the equipment I am using. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks

When I travel, I use a Sirui model P-326 carbon fiber monopod. It weighs only 0.9 pounds without a head, is 60" high at full extension, although I retract each section by about 3/4" to make it very rigid, and it folds to only 15 1/2". It has a retractable rubber foot and a spike. I have an Arca Swiss adapter mounted to the top and instead of a ball head, I use an L-bracket on my camera so I can quickly change it from the horizontal to vertical position. The Sirui also doubles as a walking stick.

Sounds like some cool suggestions on monopods. Mine isn't on a monopod.

Reading about your surgeries and carrying telephoto - brought back memories of my neck issues.
If you haven't already checkout "Cotton carrier" as a camera holder. It's a vest resembling a bullet proof vest - with a holder in front that keeps the camera & lens tight to your body and you walk/hike. Weight is on your shoulders.

Works for me

I use a Cotton Carrier along with my D800 and 70-200 f2.8 on the monopod as explained in my previous post. I could not carry that camera and lens combination all day long when I travel without it.

I've had no trouble with monopods or tripods in my carry-on luggage. As I wrote above, "hiking poles" are not allowed in carry-on. The assumed reason is that they typically have a hard, sharp metal point at the foot. The TSA does not like hard, sharp metal things.

Some monopods feature hard, sharp metal points instead of a rubber foot that can wear out. TSA security personnel have the final authority. If he/she does not like a sharp point on anything you bring, you may be told to leave it behind. My monopod has a round rubber tip.

After all that typing, here are the TSA references for monopods, hiking poles, tripods, cameras, selfie sticks and canes:

Put a fitted rubber cap over the spike when you travel. If it looks like it is part of the monopod, it will make it through TSA.

I think some of the airports have X-Ray or better scanners. As I'm trying to say, it is up to the TSA agent who is supposed to keep sharp pointy things out of the cabin.

You will want a carbon fiber for the weight and probably twist locks to facilitate carrying ( vs lever locks that can catch on things) and you will want a small light weight TILT head with quick release. This is the head I recommend : - it allows panning when the pod is at an angle other than straight vertical .

You will not want any folding mini tripod feet !
