So which user's manual should I have read? I did not find it in the manual on the camera I am thinking about buying as I have rented that camera and have looked at and read most of the manual for it learning to use it.

If one looks for but can't find the answer then what better way to find the answer than to ask? And the answer is ?????????

Oh he with the great answer to the question asked!

Nikon battery grips sound complicated in comparison to Canon, but perhaps I am misunderstanding something...

The manual may not be the best answer. Best answer would be, "It depends" until you tell us, WHAT DAMN CAMERA ARE YOU THINKING OF BUYING. Help us help you.

Yes, the suspense is simply too much to bear!

Actually he alluded to D5300. I am not aware of a Nikon grip for that model.

Nikon grips are not complicated but there are differences between models. That's why it would be helpful to know what model and grip the OP is considering.
Will I get better gas mileage with a car or truck? It depends.

Once again, it depends. The MB-D18 user's manual for the D850 is a 20 X 28 inch sheet, in 5 languages, folded map style. It shows what parts you get and has dozens of precautions and warnings but no info on capacities, frame rates, shots per battery, or video recording times. That's all covered in the D850 manual.

Bring up this link and click on accessories. The grip is listed, MB-D17. You can get all the info with that number.

When I made that reply, the OP already had stated that the information was not in the camera manual - that left only the grip manual.

Oh! If he's interested in the D500, then the information is on page 390 of the camera manual. He did say he read most of the manual. It's the last thing right before the index.

My copy of the manual shows 'Memory Card Capacity' on Page 390. Then on page 392 tell the number of photos that can be taken with 'EN-EL15 battery'. And does mention the grip and camera but really doesn't say if there is to be one in the camera and the grip or what. The way I read it in the manual the battery gives the same number of shots either in the camera or the grip. Which makes sense because it's the same battery.

But all this talk about what the manual says and were it is or not and he said she said really has nothing to do with the OP question. To those who answered the question I say "Thank You". To all others I say "Good Night".

The D500 and the D7200 allow one Nikon battery in the grip. Using AAs they use 8 and 6 respectively.
IIRC the D300 grip with the battery from the D2x or D3 gave a speed boost.

Thanks for the picture. The newer ones don't insert into the battery compartment. So when they use 2 batteries it's one in the body and one in the grip. The one you show would be much easy switching 2 batteries.
