There isn't much to say. Saying goodbye to loved pets is difficult. Comfort or lack of it really depends upon a person's overall outlook on life. For me, I wouldn't say anything but I'm sorry...I'm her if you need to talk...that's about it.

It’s never easy losing someone because when we love, we each become a part of the other. They created wonderful times together and though lives will end, their spirits will remain forever in their memories.

Best wishes for a healthy and happy grandparenting experience.

Thank you for your nice words. I am excited about being a grandparent! My son, daughter-in-law and their ailing dog are currently in transition from one Air Force Base to another, and they are living with her father in Georgia right now. They will be moving into a house on the base in Abilene on January 18, so while all this is going on with their dog, they have all these other issues on their plate. (They have to drive to Texas because she can't fly in her condition...very worrisome situation, for sure.)

The Rainbow Bridge
inspired by a Norse legend

By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

If you have always done what was good and right for the dog, you must make the last step and do what is good and right to end the dog's life painlessly and peacefully. Don't let a good and loyal friend suffer.

I feel your pain and anguish. This is the sad fact that we will outlive our four-legged sons and daughters.

When we lost a loved pet, our vet sent us this quote & we found it to bring comfort. Our pets are part of our family - I’m sorry for your loss.

We who choose to surround ourselves
with lives even more temporary than our
own, live within a fragile circle;
easily and often breached.
Unable to accept its awful gaps,
we would still live no other way.
We cherish memory as the only
certain immortality, never fully
understanding the necessary plan.

I always remember what my vet told me one time:"God takes our pets when he does because He doesn't want them to see us grow old."
My thoughts are with you and your pet.

The only thing harder to do than saying a final goodbye ( I said goodnight, instead) is living with guilt. If you do all you can do to make a family member comfortable, then the passing of time will ease some of the hurt. We said goodnight to Murphy on the 7th. The pain is there but it isn't 24/7. We had him euthanized at home. That, somehow seems better since they know they will get poked with a needle at the vets.

What nice and very comforting words. So true. I love the "We cherish memory as the only certain immortality" thought. Thank you for this profound quote!

"Good Night" is a good way to think of them going to sleep for the last time. We have our own little dog, Oscar, who is getting on in years. He's also 9 years old, but in good health. It's hard to watch my son and his wife have to go through this, when we get to keep our little pal longer. Tough one, for sure.

May the following help.

Rainbow Bridge Letter
Hi, Mom/dad
Now that I’ve been across The Rainbow Bridge for a couple weeks, they said I should write a letter home. Sorry, mum, but I’m so busy ‘across the bridge’ that I haven’t thought of home much. They said it’s okay and that you would understand. I hope you do. (I think you will.)

Remember that night when I wasn’t feeling very well and we were all crying? I don’t remember much, but I do remember seeing and hearing all of you and feeling your touches and hugs…I remember hearing “we love you” and that one last command of “Go through”. I didn’t know what you meant, so I turned around and walked through the fog that was in front of me. I saw the biggest bridge I’ve ever seen! And so many friends on the other side of it! They were all playing with toys and balls! You were right to tell me to go there!

My feet kept moving forward, but my heart kept pulling me back. Your touches became lighter and lighter and I wanted to come back and nudge your hands for more love, but I was overcome by this feeling of curiosity for the happy place over the bridge! My feet started moving on their own, like a gentle breeze was moving them forward for me! I can’t explain it, but I had no doubt that it was the right thing to do!

So, I walked across that big, huge bridge by myself! I looked for you, because you’re always by my side, walking with me, but this was different. I didn’t have a collar around my neck or a leash connecting me to you ~ I was ‘free’! Even though you weren’t there with me, I never felt alone! I actually felt like I had a huge cape of love wrapped around my body and the more I walked, the easier it was to breathe! So, I kept walking! And I would feel more warmth in the big hug, so I kept on walking! I eventually made it over the big bridge – I did it by myself, mum!

When I got here, all of my new friends greeted me and helped me walk off the bridge ~ it was so cool! They gave me a pair of wings and said that I was now a Guardian Angel!

What I’ve learned over these past few weeks has been amazing and nothing like I’ve seen before! We’re all the same up here ~ we all have wings and we all have Forever People to watch over ~ that’s YOU, mum! You’re my Forever Person and I’m your Forever Dog! We had such a great life together and I do miss you a LOT, but please know that I am so happy in my new home across The Bridge!

I’ll send you another Earth Angel so you won’t be alone. Give them your whole heart, like you gave it to me. I’ll check in every so often to make sure they treasure your love ~ I always did! When you miss me, think of a rainbow and know I’m on the other side of it, waiting to walk with you again. I’ll always be in your heart. I love you, mum! Time for me to go play🐾🐾

Rainbow Bridge (pets)

The theme is of a mythological place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner. It has gained wide popularity amongst animal lovers who have lost a pet.

Although no major religion specifically refers to such a place for pets, the belief shows similarities with the Bifröst bridge of Norse Mythology.

The Story
The story tells of a green meadow located "this side of Heaven" (i.e., before one enters into it). Rainbow Bridge is both the name of the meadow and an adjoining bridge connecting it to Heaven.

According to the story, when a pet dies it goes to the meadow, having its body cured of any illnesses, frailties and/or injuries. The pet runs around and plays with other pets, missing only one thing – the love and companionship of its owner, who is still alive on Earth.

Upon the pet owner's death, on his/her journey toward Heaven s/he crosses the meadow. While doing so, the pet (along with any other pets the owner had while on Earth) spots its owner and runs to greet him/her. Reunited, the pet(s) and owner cross the Rainbow Bridge together into Heaven, never again to be parted.

My son's little doggie is fading right before our eyes...been diagnosed with degenerative bone disorder, arthritis in his back and hips and Cushings...he's eating less and less. The vet has him on 3 meds to fight the symptoms. I know it's "that" time and I know it's sad, but do any of you know any comfort words?

He and his wife are expecting twins within the next two or three months and they are heartbroken about their four-legged friend they've had with them for nine years. It's a very difficult thing to talk to them about. I'm struggling with what words to say to comfort them...thanks.

My Wife & I just put down our Choc. Lab a year ago. It was a real strain. Between the two of us and our Vet. we all agreed together that had we not put him down he would be allowed to suffer. He was a member of our family but both of us with the Vet. did the right thing and let him go to the lord. Nobody can convince me that dogs don't have a heaven and we all felt that we did the right thing by relieving him of his pain. We both feel that he felt too that he was ready. I still love dogs, but now that I'm approaching 80 years old I don't feel that I have the years left to give to another pet.

I hate to admit it, but that actually got me a little choked up. I know that some day we will be facing the same thing as my son and daughter-in-law are now, and this will bring great comfort - it already does. I think it will help a lot. I'm going to save this, and all the other wonderful thoughts and ideas I'm getting here for when the "time" comes for them. I think it will only be weeks, maybe even days, when I'll try to help with this wonderful story. Thank you so much for this!
