I took a trip with Hitchman. He knows his stuff.

Here is a resource you may find helpful. It is one of Robert Hitchman’s Photograph America newsletters. I use them often. They are written by an accomplished photographer for photographers. Each is about 12 page and loaded with a lot of good info. You can download a pdf for $8 and either print it out or store it on your smart phone or tablet. This one is specifically about Yellowstone in winter. Hope you find it useful.

You didn't mention where you're flying into, Jackson or West Yellowstone. From Jackson snowmobile tours to Yellowstone Canyon or Old Faithful. Millers butte rams, Gros Ventre for moose and elk, drive south to the canyon for sheep. West Yellowstone has both track and snowmobiles. The snowmobiles have both seat and hand warmers, gloves, boots, and snowmobile suits are provided. We've never been cold. I use a D7100 with a 28-300 on the snowmobiles inside the coat (never had a problem with fogging.) When driving I use the same lens with a 150-600 for long shots. We'll be flying to Jackson on Jan 15 again. I've been going to Jackson since the 40's, my grandfather in Wilson.

I haven’t had the pleasure to be able to shoot with him, but he lives fairly close to me and I have met him. We talked a lot before I left on a trip to the Southwest, and he got me in touch with the guy who took me into Canyon X by Page, AZ. Nice guy, and very knowledgeable. I have his complete set of newsletters stored on my phone and use them often.

Consider these. I have no idea your glove size, so assumed small:

The first two look to be equal in insulation, the Vallerret's are wonderfully built.

Thanks for your post. We actually are driving and going directly to Jackson. I grew up in Casper and have to the area many times, but never in winter. My folks did the snowmobile trip in the late 60’s. His photos are long gone now but my memory of them is what “driving” me there. Husband is a good sport and great assistant! I am so excited!

How much fun! Back in the 90's we used to go to Yellowstone about every 2-3 winters snowmobiling. They came with handwarmers on the handlebars. We always saw about as many animals in the winter as we did in the summer. Lots of buffalo & elk around the Old Faithful area. So much ice around the geyser areas from the mist freezing on trees. One time we had a complete whiteout going through Hayden Valley -- couldn't even see the snowmobile in front of you! We always stayed at the Stagecoach Inn in West Yellowstone & took 1 day for the Old Faithful area, 1 day for Norris and Mammoth Hot Springs area, and the 3rd day for the Upper & Lower Falls in the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone area. Back then I also only had an old Cannon PowerShot camera & pictures were OK but not great compared to the Nikon 5300 I have now. I need to go back. Have fun!

Cold hands trick. Get two of those tennis wrist bands and put the Hot Hands hand warmer between the band and the inside of your wrist. Keeps blood going to hands warm while staying out of the way.

I am going to be in the Tetons and Yellowstone this January and am looking for advice/suggestions. I use a d7100, and am taking my 18-300, 11-18, and 18-140 and a good tripod. I have 3 batteries. Biggest concern is cold hands when shooting. I’ve done some research, but first hand from you all seems like a good idea! Thanks in advance and Happy New Year to all!

Be sure to buy some hand warmers and keep them in your pockets. I also use battery heated insoles in my boots. Once your fingers or toes get too cold your done!

If you plan to do any driving inside YNP be sure to research what roads are closed in winter - many are and if my memory is correct (always dubious these days) that includes the West Yellowstone and East entrances. If you plan a snow coach or snowmobile tour you may have a problem with the pace of the tour being too rapid for good photography (you did mention a tripod) so research that also. The park cannot be legally entered on a snowmobile or snow coach other than on an officially licensed guided tour.

If you will be traveling from/to the park on Highway 20 which is west of the park a little known place for great scenic photos are the Mesa Falls in the Island Park Caldera. There are two of them, Upper and Lower, and the Upper Falls is accessed by a very short walk. It's a large fall with a huge amount of ice build up around it in the winter, very photgenic. Lower Falls is beautiful but can only be seen at a distance without a rigorous hike. These are accessed by Highway 47 which intersects with Highway 20 just south of the town of Last Chance in the north and the town of Ashton in the south. The falls are only a few miles longer than taking 20 and there are other scenic points along the way. I live in that area and think some of the scenery on the west side of the two parks is as beautiful as in the park itself.

Have a great visit to our beautiful part of the world!
