Love to have coffee and meet you??? I don't know how contact exactly works on this site?? Congratulation s on your new lens.

Bear - since you didn't use Quote Reply - this did not get addressed to the specific person to whom you wrote it. So, you have two options: a) copy it onto the clipboard (drag the mouse over it, with button pressed, to highlight it, then Press CTRL and C) then find the person to whom you wish to address this, and hit Quote Reply ... then hit CTRL and V to paste it into the box, and hit send .... b) click on the name of the person who also lives in La Mesa ... and you will be transported to the Private Message screen ... then enter your message (if you want, drop this in) Title it - and hit send ....

This sounds like you might be responding to me. Are you a member of the Pacific Photographic Society? I'm registered for the Hawk Watch with them. It's a meetup.com group. I don't do coffee but I'd love to go out with you sometime. I'm going to be going to the San Diego Botanic Garden soon with my new macro lens.

It all depends on what you want to photograph. If you're going for wildlife, you're going to want a long lens (150-600) e.g. and a 50mm or thereabouts at least.

I shoot a variety of things with a Nikon D7100. I have two reasonably good "Kit" lenses...18-55mm and 55-200mm. I have a Nikon 35mm 1.8 G series which is my walkaround. I have an SP60 Tamron macro lens which is sharp as a razor and is a decent portrait lens, and I have a Tamron 150-600 which I dearly love. I would like to replace the two kit lenses with an 18-24mm Tamron and a 70-200mm f2.8 Nikon or Tamron. I can cover pretty much anything with these lenses.

So that's 5 - I think, Sky ... if I counted right ... that's a fairly good complement ... nothing really wide, though (your 35 works out to be a 52 - more or less - normal) ... but it's a fast one - so you also have the low light situation covered ... I also have that Tamron SP 60 f2 Macro - another fast (and incredibly sharp) lens ... you're doing okay ... got the long length covered there with the 150-600 ... got a multiplier, too, Sky?

I photograph nature, landscapes to wildlife. My arsenal ranges from 24 to 500 mm's with a couple of TC's thrown in.

Arsenal, huh, Bill?

So you have the 1.4x AND the 2x, do you?

24-500 - that's a pretty good range ... covers everything but the extra wide ... still ....

We were in Europe twice in 2017; I shoot a Nikon D700 & I took two Nikkor lens — 24-70 f2.8 & 24-120 f4. These met most of my needs, but a fellow photographer on the trip shot with a D810 & Nikkor 28-300 that I will admit looked awfully useful.

Way back in the old days, when served in the Navy as a photographer, on the USS Noah’s Ark, I bought an Exakta for personal work. I bought 35mm, 50mm and 135mm Schneider lenses and that range of focal lengths pretty well served me as long as I used film in the 35mm format. One time I glommed onto a 24mm Zeiss Flektogon that I often added a 28mm to my stable when I changed camera brands, My 35mm cameras included Pentax, Nikon, Canon, and Contax.

I started to use zooms with Canon and Contax. My favorite Canon Zoom was a 24-105, f/4. That lens changed my life - and my back. I just used that one lens for almost all purposes.

Personally, I love wide angle lenses, except for fisheyes. I am happy for those who do like fisheyes, but I don’t care for the distortion.

I like a minimum of a range from wide angle,,,14-15-16 mm at the wide end to long telephoto say 800mm,,,this requires a minimum of three or four zoom lenses and maybe throw in a teleconverter,,,then a Portrait Lens,,,then a Macro Lens or two,,,then a Fisheye Lens like the Canon 8-15,,,would like to someday own some tilt/shift lenses and long telephoto primes,,,so minimum of three lenses covering wide angle to long telephoto,,,with no maximum on the number of lenses to buy and enjoy....

The Sigma is not stabilized. I've never missed it though.

The 35 f/2 IS is not an L lens but is sharper than the original Canon 35mm f/1.4 L. It get rave reviews everywhere. When it was originally introduced the price at $850 was too high. Now it can be had for $549 to $599 and at that price point it is an excellent value. That len's tStop (a measure of light transmission) is identical to it's maximum fStop which is very unusual. As a result, even though it's an f/2 lens it lets in almost as much light as most F/1.4 lenses which generally have tStops of 1.6 to 1.8. In short it's an excellent low light lens and the 4 stop stabilization means you can almost shoot in the dark handheld.

Sounds like a pretty damned good lens, then, Mark ... hang on to THAT one !!!

I have one camera and four lenses. Is that enough? I can only use one lens at a time. Is that OK? If I miss a picture, I miss a picture. Is that OK? It's all good for me.

Four lenses should be fine, G ... if it works for you - go for it! ... Sure it's okay to only use one lens at a time ... and sure it's okay to only have/use one camera. And, hey - if you miss something ... that's fine, too ... all is good ... however you want to go about it ... to each his own ... as long as it's good for you ....

D-995, huh, Ripley? ... did you make up one, or was that a typo? ... Should it have been - D90, perhaps?

Sounds like a pretty fair complement, you have there ... 5 primes - 4 zooms ... again, though - nothing wide beyond 20mm ... enough, tho, on a D800, huh?

The correct definitions of both "complement" used here in this Topic Post and "compliment" as incorrectly used by you and another - are on the first page, Bob!
