I have said this before but will repeat it once more. I bought Luminar in early November and a week later I was requesting a refund on my money.
I found Luminar 2018 VERY SLOW and the larger the size of the file the worst it was. I know there was an update and another is coming in 2018 but I do not really know if there has been an improvement in its speed.
I think it could be a good editor but its speed was a show stopper for me.

I preordered Luminar HD 2018, and worked with the support team to try and iron out the slowness in processing my photos in Windows. After waiting over 30 minutes my adjusted photo was done. The final results were great, but I had 24 more photos to edit. I sent the support team all requested information like the NEF files, my computer information, they didn't have a solution and honored my request for a refund.

Luminar is a nice program and you can do a lot with it. The big disadvantage is that you load one photo at a time, edit it, then save it. If you are doing onesy twosies then no problem. If you are doing more, you will be at it forever. I use LR for 99% of my editing. If I want a certain effect not easily available in LR then I edit it in Luminar. Sunrays, for example.

Yes, LR can send photos to Luminar for editing with or without the LR changes. Load Luminar as a 'plug in' for LR.

Yes - this explains my issue perfectly. If I have a 100+ photo shoot to process, doing them one at a time is simply not acceptable.

As far as photo organization, I use Photos on the iMac and keep backup copies in folders in the Pictures area. Looking forward to what will be added to Luminar.

I bought Luminar 2018 shortly after it was announced based on all the great reviews. Last week I started using Photos on MacOS High Sierra and am finding it to be a solid pairing. Photos allows you to use Luminar as an external editor, so it handles all the file transfers in the background. This version of Photos is much more advanced than earlier versions with several editing tools built-in.

No one has mentioned it so I assume Luminar does NOT have the ability to import edits from LR. Right?

I can go directly from LR to Luminar 2018. You can open from Luminar

Bruce, I've been using Luminar since June or so last year and love it. I currently use Lightroom Classic and Photoshop by subscription and use Lightroom for my organizer.

I'm very impressed with the way Macphun, (Skylum) has developed Luminar so that the 'Learning Curve' is so much easier than the combo of LR & PS. Luminar is well laid out and the Filters just makes sense.

I look forward to the release of their Organizer. I expect Adobe will loose many of their subscribers, and not because of any cost savings, but simply because Luminar is more user friendly and yet very powerful.

For now this would be the approach i would think you should use. LightRoom as your DAM (or Photos or On1 Raw 2018) and use the filters you like in MacPhun, Nik , what ever. I would be using that approach if i just trusted Adobe more but been there done that so I've moved to On1 Raw 2018 as my prime DAM then plugins to LightRoom 6, Luminar, Nik or whatever else I use for style.

It works as a plug in to LR.

Thanks for your input. I guess I haven't tried the Auto Adjustment since they improved it. I tried it on one photo and it worked great. I tried it on a photo that need more adjusting and it did't work so well. But if I can get it to work 75% of the time I will be happy. Going to download the free trial of Luminar tomorrow, but right now I'm leaning toward stinking with Lightroom.

I just got Luminar and, when I learn it, I think I'll like it. Both for the available tutorial videos and for having avoiding Adobe's predatory licensing prices. I even switched to Nuance Power PDF Advanced and dumped Acrobat. All-in-all, I take some pride in having taken action instead of just whining; lighting a candle beats cursing the darkness seven ways from Sunday.

After reading another thread of glowing reviews of Luminar on UHH, I am thinking of giving it a try. I have subscribed to Adobe’s Creative Cloud since May and use Lightroom Classic for photo organization and editing. (I haven’t really figured out how to use Photoshop.) I am very happy with Lightroom, but I wonder if there is something better out there.

My main problem with Lightroom is that while it has awesome photo editing capabilities, I spend a lot of time editing my photos. It appears that Luminar is much better at making auto adjustments.

My question to Luminar users is, what do you do in the way of photo organization and browsing sinceLuminar does not have this capability? They say it is coming in 2018, but they said it was coming in 2017 too. I already organize my photos into folders, but Lightroom allows me to tag my favorites and to put them into collections. What do you do since Luminar does not do those things?

What do you do about browsing through your photos? I’ve seen Fast Raw Viewer touted here, and I am thinking of using that, but I presume it will only show the photo before any post processing. If that is correct, how do you browse the finished photo?

Finally, what do you think about keeping Lightroom for the things Luminar doesn’t do? That seems like a lot of duplication since their capabilities overlap so much, but I could be convinced.

Edit: I am using a MacBook Pro right now and will probably buy a 27" iMac next year.

Good questions! I use Luminar 2018 now on an iMac with 64 GB Ram and couldn't be happier. It is fast and super intuitive. I use Aperture for data management and am looking forward to the upgraded (free to 2018 user) Luminar program when it comes. I do hear that on Windows it is slower than Mac, but that is nothing new. You can try 30 days for free and give it a try as I did. I find it very, very intuitive and fast (no doubt the Ram and MAC OS helps). The speed and easy manipulation of photos is a treat. Working with a photo and being able to see exactly what the finished product will look like as well as batch processing makes it a dream for me. I am afraid that I do not garner a lot of enjoyment from editing for hours. I just did 66 photos from a shoot last night in fewer minutes.

One time fee which in my opinion is inexpensive vs. a membership payment plan is the icing on the cake.

Good luck!

I have been using Luminar since it was on the market and was pleased with it. I purchased Luminar 2018 but received a refund as it was slower than the original. It also didn’t have lens correction by camera and and len’s models. I did like the sun ray but wouldn’t add it to a picture. Now purchased LightRoom/Photoshop as a requirement for my college classes. At 74 decided to get better educated in photography.

I have LR/PS CC and Luminar as a plug-in to LR. This way you get the catalog & database power of LR and Luminar's additional capabilities.

You may be interested in this. Short videos and she did say she would be discussing integrating with Lightroom.

It's free and I think includes a $10 coupon for Luminar. In the meantime you can use a Trial Version.
