In this session I want to explain the difference between seeing things "the way they are" verses seeing things "the way they could be." IMHO, it's the latter where creative thinking resides! Rarely does one photo so clearly exemplify this as in the example shown here!
When I pulled the flower onto my computer, the first thing I noticed was the out-of -focused yellow feelers! They were blurry looking and had to go. But in so doing, it would radically change the way the flower looked! So I used the Clone Stamp Tool and slowly removed the yellow blurs to see what would happen. It was at this point, I had to think in terms of "what could be!" Had I stayed fixated on it being a flower, I would have probably deleted the photo and that would have been that!
Using the clone tool, I decided to take some of the black area in the upper middle and add it to the lower right to give the photo an overall feel of continuity! That's when I saw a face for the first time! I imagined the new black area was akin to a mouth and the upper dark spots were eye sockets! The conical shape that wrapped around the eye socket resembled a nose like structure and the two tentacles coming out of the eyes and down to the bottom of the image just made it look more monstrous! The only thing left to do was to put a couple of eyes in the sockets, darken it up some and that would nail it down! I did this by using the Brush tool with a white color and placed a circle in each eye. Then, using black, made a smaller circle and placed that into each white circle! I darkened the image overall by using the Levels Tool. The clone tool extended the tentacles.
Processing can often force you to either think out of the box or trash a photo! Force yourself to stay with it and mentally see what could be,,, you will be surprised at some of your amazing results!
Who Knows? Only those who try!
Have fun,
