Someone on this forum asked a rather remedial question regarding the D850. I downloaded the manual to find the answer. One of the first things that caught my attention was on the very front page of the manual.

I quote, "Read this manual thoroughly before using the camera".

I wish girlfriends came with the same sort of documentation.

How about a manual for wives?

Nice idea, but some folks do have a real problem following the manual. When I got my first real Nikon digital after years away from real cameras, I had a hard time making sense of it. Found third party books or other sources easier to comprehend. Now several bodies later, I find the D850 manual understandable. Not because they did a better job, but I now know what they are talking about. I think we need to understand, that whether people come to UHH for D850 help or D3400 help, they probably need it. Even the D850 has stuff in the manual that is tough to digest when you get into some features. I think when people come to UHH with a question, that READ THE MANUAL is not a proper answer. You don't know the skill level or comprehension of the writer. We did not all get A's in school. We were all photo dumb once and now we can share our knowledge rather than scare folks off. I thought that was what UHH was for, not to tell people to go find the answer elsewhere. Locally in our camera club, if new people have a question, we don't tell them to go read a book.

Primary sources are usually the most accurate. We may have to re-translate Jenglish to English, but there is no more accurate source.

Read The *Fine* Manual is always good advice. If you want to learn efficiently and effectively, it’s the starting point. Other resources may be required for context.

Yes, read the manual! I want the manual to document exactly what the camera will do in response to each control. I don't want the manual to tell me why I would want to do that. It is the job of photographic teaching books to tell us why and how. It is the job of the manual to tell us exactly what the camera does. For example: the manual should tell us how the bracketing works how many pictures, what variation, what order, do you need to reset it or not (this was probably the question that spurred Bob original post, he had responded to it a coupe of days ago.) I don't need the manual to tell me why to bracket(just to get it right, or set up for HDR, or whatever) When a photographic teaching book is teaching about a technique that requires bracketing, it shouldn't have to tell you how to bracket, its different for each camera.

At one time or another I have had to resort to reading the Spanish or French versions of some manuals to make sense of the mangled English text. This applies to all sorts of manuals, not just camera manuals.

Yes, for some reason, probably cost, companies think it is fun going to bed at night while the customers are struggling with the poor English.

The manual for my 1967 Honda 90 (Motorcycle) said "Please" before every instruction

“Prease”. L and R are often reversed in Japanese speech. We hosted a Japanese exchange student when I was in high school. She was a college English major. After 14 years of English, she *still* said prease and Rick and ice cleam.

Years ago I read the manual in Bob fashion. Nowaday, I read the manual too but I read the PDF version keeping my manual in pristine condition. Oh yes I do read the manuals thru. I also read manuals on cameras that I don't own. In fact I read the manual on my cameras before I bought them now because I can get them without buying the cameras. I read the manual then went to the store to check the camera out. That way I know how to use it when I am at the store.
If I compare several cameras as potential purchases I would read all the manuals before making decision.

I too download the PDF manual and read it. It is much easier on my aging eyes that the 3 point font in many manuals.
I also load it on my tablet so I have a portable manual to take with me. When I am going to mentor a beginner, I also download their manual so I can help them with their camera if they have not mastered it yet.

Software used to come with a manual too but software manuals seems to be extinct. The online "Help" is practically useless because companies like Adobe mix the help for all their software together. It seems now you have to buy the Missing Manual to make up for the deficiencies of the software companies.

I did that once. It wouldn't boil no matter how long I watched it. Then one day my wife walked in, asked what I was doing, shook her head and turned on the burner!

This dang computer did not work at first. Until my son asked, "Did you plug it in and turn it on?" Must've been made by the same folks who made your pot.
