i use a nikon 5200 and find some distortion with my sigma 17 to 70 at high magnifications would this be improved with the nikon 18 to 80 lens or is this a sensor problem

It is not a sensor problem. All lenses or most zooms starting at 18mm will distort the images.

could the low pass filter be the problem?

Are you referring to the Nikon 16-80 lens? It is a great lens. I have the latest firmware that has the distortion program built into it.

It's the lens. You will often get barrel distortion at wide angle settings and pincushion distortion at long focal lengths.
