Order the d850 before your wife has a change of heart and mind, fix the D810 afterwards at your leisure, rent a camera body from a camera shop , for your assignment. All is well. Doesn’t sound like a major fix to me.

Don't fall into that trap! You get it and she will want a new car to go with it!

Yeah, perhaps a Maserati Ghibli. That would work.

Thanks, but no joy. Whatever it is is wedged into the left side of the slot on the metal slider that locks the SD card in place. It must have come off when I was removing the offending card.

For future reference, what SD card brand & model was that?

Never mind the paper clip. Get yourself a set of dental picks. I recommend all eight.

With these it's possible to extract all kinds of stuff that can't be reached with tweezers or paper clips. They are also handy for scraping paint out of screw slots if you've ever had that problem too. Good Luck!

I have a D810 and have never used an SD card in it. Only CF memory which I have used in every body I have owned since 2000. Don’t know why, but I am just more comfortable with CF memory.

Just wait until you bend on of those tiny little pins down inside the camera. You will curse whomever invented the CF connection system.

Yesterday, I was formatting some SD cards in my D810 when, suddenly, I could not get a card to seat in the SD slot; kept popping up. An inspection of the SD card showed that the front edge of the card had broken off (could tell from the rough plastic that was not there before) right in front of the contacts. I cannot see anything in the slot shaking, compressed air and yelling will not work.

(It sucks being me).

Will take the body to Nikon service on Tuesday in Los Angeles and see what the damage is. AND, I have a photo workshop on the 4th, so will probably have to rent something, unless it is an easy fix.

One bright side? Wife looks over and says, "well you wanted a D850, didn't you....."

I would take it to Nikon. Poking around with a paper clip or other tool risks damaging delicate contact fingers. Rent another body from Sammies if you have to. Or buy the 850 and keep the 810 as well. You can keep different lenses on them and switch cameras instead of lenses. ;)

hum... Sandisk is I presume about as good as it gets in terms of quality. Perhaps we should discard old flash cards, not because the flash memory might be worn out but because the plastic case has deteriorated with time? That's a twist I hadn't anticipated.

Excellent idea JD, that’s just what I did. Apparently, Samys On Fairfax has no D850 shortage.

Very good. Samy's is a great resource! Good luck with your shoot.

Are you a member of NPS, if so you can borrow a camera for free. They will have the camera sent to your house in two days.

First thing, kiss the wife and promise her ANYTHING because she is a keeper. Secondly, remove the battery before you try to try any fix suggested here. Thirdly, take the camera to an authorized Nikon repair center!!! Fourthly, review "First thing and Secondly" again and again!!!
