Once heard someone say "I don't care, I go bare" and I think he was talking about lenses lol. I once dropped my 70-200 on some gravel surface and the lens hood took the brunt of the fall. That was 3 years ago and the lens is still working just fine at indoor and outdoor sports events. The only filters I use are CPL's when the sunlight will be a problem. Started shooting in 1971, just for reference sake.
You are always going to hear all kinds of misfortunes and exceptions. I was in the Smoky Mtns a few years ago and my wide-angle was on a sling and hit the corner of the metal post holding up a guard rail. The lens hood did not offer any protection because it was so wide. Fortunately, the filter saved the lens from possibly being cracked. The filter did crack and it was an expensive Nikon clear glass filter (one of those wide $100 jobs), but at least it wasn't the front element.
