It is certainly a great reference! Check the site for other interesting "secrets."

Yes. The pixel density of the D850 and D500 is about the same.

There might be a difference in the dynamic range/high ISO performance of the sensors.
There might also be a difference in the processing of the sensor data. Likely the newer camera (D850) is better if there is a difference. This comparison asserts the D850 has a little better dynamic range and much better high ISO performance: http://cameradecision.com/compare/Nikon-D500-vs-Nikon-D850

I generally find those Camera Decision reviews to lack in-depth information and analysis. Good for a quick and cursory comparison only.

Laura, It appears that you have made your decision! I value Steve Perry's opinions. Best of luck!

Just to add oil to the fire. Bryan Peterson a well known professional photographer lecturer, teacher and author of many books on photography states on the front cover of his book. Understanding Exposure, Fourth Edition; How to Shoot Great Photographs with Any Camera. What is up with that??

Not sure what your point is. Care to expound?

I referenced Steve Perry party because of his valuable expertise with the cameras we are talking about.

It means that the person pressing the shutter is the key to a great photo. Isn’t that obvious?

Google “IPPA Awards” - all those photos come from iPhones.

Come back to UHH, search for photos taken with DSLRs. You will see that a phone camera in the hands of a talented photographer produces superior results vs the “best camera” in the hands of a snap shot shooter.

You are welcome.

It is amusing sometimes to go back to the OPs original post and see how far afield the discussion has gone.

I think her first question on availability and second question about using just the 850 vs. keeping the 500 were both answered.

Guess we can assume the answer to her last question due to the non-replies: so far no issues reported with the 850. But given there are only 14,000 out there so far and for a relatively short time it ay not be time to celebrate yet. The D600 oil problem took a while to surface.

LOL! Have it your way, but the OP put her items up for sale to pursue the D850, most likely satisfied that it would suit her needs at least partially due to the information received. Some knew what her dilemma actually was.

I referenced Bryan Peterson because of the cameras you are talking about. Bryan Peterson is also a renowned expert in the field of photography. Peterson says; "How to shoot great photographs with ANY Camera" Hense the oil on the fire. Perhaps you don't need the next great thing.
