I agree. I also always wanted to try Photoshop but could not afford the $800 or so cost of it. Now, for chump change, I have the latest Lightroom, Photoshop, and Bridge, all frequently updated. Hardly a "rip off". Thousands of dollars for cameras lenses, accessories, computers, printers, paper, ink etc., and ten dollars a month is a rip off?

I am sorry to hear that you are having issues with your older versions of PS and LR. But, I fail to see that the Adobe annual subscription is a rip off. I started with PSE version 2. I dutifully upgraded annually at about $70 per year. It seemed evertime I upgraded I had to reorganize my photos. I always wanted to try PS but could not justify the cost. Now I have both LR and PS for an additional $50 per year and don’t have to reorganize my collection when I get a new upgrade. I think it is a hell of a deal.

Yes, unfortunately. I'll keep my 2014 version. On Amazon, it's $90 for twenty-seven months. I paid $60, and I've used it for over four years and will continue to use it. It does all I want, so there are no features that would attract me to sign up for constant updates. Imagine how much you could be paying every year for software, radio, and TV if you went ahead with subscription plans. It would be thousands of dollars vs nothing at all.

As you said, Adobe has shown businesses how much money they can get from us by charging us continually rather than just once. If they were considerate of their customers, they would offer both subscription and standalone, but their concern is making money, not serving the public. It's a shame.

If you feel that Adobe is charging you too much. Do not subscribe. The choice is yours. They offer you a product for a fee. They are servicing the demands of the photography industry. Their customers who demand the latest options so they can enhance their work. The shame would be if they charged you the same year in and year out and did not improve their product.
I wonder what Adobe payroll looks like?? How many people at the various level of product development. Advertising. Social Security and Medicare contributions for employees.

I agree too. Learning Photoshop is a fun challenge. You also get the new mobile stuff and a website to display images.

I've done all the updates and refuse to go to the Adobe monthly rip-off plan.

Any suggestions?

Your software is "too old" and can't handle the RAW files from the newer camera.

Lightroom 13.1? Are you sure you don't mean Elements? There was an Elements 13 (now a few years out of date).

The current, highest perpetual licensed version of Lightroom is LR 6. There has never been and never will be a Lightroom 13.

Lightroom 6.14 is very the most up-to-date (and final) version. That or the previous 6.13 are updated to handle D850 NEF files.

https://nikonrumors.com/2017/10/26/adobe-lightroom-6-13-now-available-with-nikon-d850-support.aspx/

An alternative is to convert the NEF files to DNG (Adobe "digital negative" RAW files), using the DNG Converter that's available to download for free from the Adobe website. DNG will be usable with older versions of Adobe s'wares. HOWEVER, before you do that read up on DNG.... Some users have noted some problems. (At the very least, after making DNG from them don't dispose of NEF files, but archive them in case needed in the future.)

Then I would stop complaining and find another RAW processor to use.

You might as well get used to the monthly plans, I forecast that more and more companies will be moving that way, especially after seeing how successful Adobe’s plan works. <quote snipped>

There's a very good reason for subscription plans. Consider Adobe Photoshop before the subscription plan:
- it cost in the neighborhood of $700 because Adobe had to recoup their expenses on the sale
- many who might like to try it were priced out of the market
- those who couldn't or wouldn't pay the price did without or resorted to pirated software
- updates were infrequent and expensive, because they needed to be big in order to get people to pony up the bucks needed to support the development

After subscription:
- the entry price is $10. Almost anyone can afford to try it, with low risk if you decide to go with something else
- the incentive for piracy (if it's even possible) is greatly reduced
- the pool of people who can afford it is greatly expanded, insuring Adobe's revenue stream
- development can be made incrementally and delivered frequently

From Adobe's point of view, there is no downside to this. For those of us who updated with every release, our expenses aren't that much different and are more predictable, and we always have the latest whiz-bang by golly. For those of us (like me) who rarely updated, the net expense might be greater over time, but not by a very great deal. The more problematic aspect is that if my money gets tighter (and for me it will, but I hope never so tight $10 a month is onerous) then I can't just decide to stick with what I have. I pays the dough or I lose the software.

I'M thanking Abobe for saving me money. I don't need a D850 but kinda wanted one, if I can't work NEF files with Adobe I'LL just suffer without the D850. For now lol

I don't think there is a legitimate need for the D850. There is, however, a want. It all goes back to the difference between men and boys is the price of their toys.

Adobe is NOT Microsoft, no matter what they think. I'm really disappointed in their greed.
But, y'all are right....I best get used to it!

For sure. I retire on Friday. I was going to wait until the end of the month but decided all my work is done. The "picks" are in. I took my investment team to a long lunch yesterday and gave them the rest of the week off. I rewarded my self with a new car. My toy is an Audi A8. I really wanted the Audi R8 but an old 74-year-old guy getting in and out was a sight to see.

No....I think Adobe monthly fee is a rip. I would much rather have the option to choose...outright purchase or monthly.
Now that you mention Camera Company rip-offs,
Both Nikon and Canon use artificial price maintenance to keep pricing on their products at close to MSRP. Free market and the New York discounters work for us and not the camera companies. They could be competitive, but are terrified that Canon, Nikon, Sony, et al, will lose their orders.
This kind of artificial price maintenance has been promoted for the last decade and WE, the consumers, end up paying more! Arghhhh!

What "New York discounters" work for you?? You have the option. You exercised that option by not paying the monthly fee.
