Thanks for the kind words everyone. Like I say, the D850 can get the job done for action and I really don't feel like I'm missing out by not using my D500 or even my D5. I think the D850 strikes a really good balance between frame rate, AF, and resolution for just about any kind of nature photography.

Thank you for your response and the priceless photos. I am very familiar sanderlings, having lived in Nova Scotia. They are extremely had to capture in flight. Good job, Steve.

I have read your Tern article a few days ago. I will be experimenting with the DX mode on my D850. Hopefully less noise at higher ISO. Right now, I still prefer my D5 in low light conditions.

Cheers!

Just a quick note - I only switch to actual DX mode (or, more commonly, 1.2X crop mode) if I'm relatively sure I'm not going to be able to get any closer. I keep it in full FX mode most of the time and just crop at home - you don't want to miss a shot when switching crop modes :)

BTW - I also have my Fn2 button set so when I press it and turn the dial, it switches crop modes - makes it quicker to switch.

If Steve's word on the D850 vs D500 is not enough, take a looksie here at Brad Hill's Blog. Brad is a pro wildlife photographer based out of Vancouver Canada.
Go to this link and then click on 'In The Field' to read his notes.

This is the image you should be seeing. http://www.naturalart.ca/images/detail/mammals/bears/D90_7651_WhiteBear_Boss_Shake_2x.jpg

As almost always, my comments are based upon full-resolution raw files viewed at 100% magnfication on display of approximately 100 ppi (not on a resolution-reduced print as some others choose to do)."

After hearing that the Nikon D850 would make a great wildlife camera, I’ve considered selling my D500 and D810 and buying one. Right now I use my D500 exclusively for my birding and wildlife photography and my D810 for everything else (portraiture, macro work, etc). I like the idea of having one camera for everything because I’ve had both a crop sensor and a full frame for a long time. Wondering a few things...
First, when is the backlog of orders expected to be caught up? I cannot find any info online about expected availability. I do not have an order in but have asked to be notified by B&H and Adorama when they’re in stock.
Secondly, has anyone heard of any issues with the D850? I’ve only heard great things. Any input is welcome!

Read it and weep Einstein. One the first things to do to get out of a hole is to stop digging. I await your apology.

Pack your lunch 'cause it will be a long wait. Thanks for the kind words.

Yep. You are so predictable and unable to admit when you are wrong. Misinformation is what you excel in. You definitely belong on this site.

The 850 is somewhat redundant with the 500. As has previously been stated, you can make the 850 a "DX", simply by changing a setting (takes longer to write it than to DO it!).
I don't know how the two cameras comparing the real world as far as focus and speed...But the 850 is simply amazing! It focuses almost instantaneously
(Makes the D810 seem like it's working in slow-motion!) And in extremely dark situations, it SOMEHOW finds focus (although more slowly).

And, surprisingly. I haven't seen much praise for the processor. But picture quality is noticeably improved. It's almost like I got a new set of lenses!
Even though I already had top -of-the-line Nikkors, they suddenly seem sharper and have more "pop" to them.

And, for wildlife, aviation...anywhere you're going to be doing a lot of cropping, those extra MP's are quite helpful.

Hi Steve,

From a few YouTube vids by users of both the D500 and the D850, I understood that the D500 may have a slight edge in focusing speed over the D850, even though they share the same focusing system. I seem to recall that this conclusion was reached by at least two professionals. I am almost certain that photographer Mark Smith mentioned this in one of his videos. In any case, from your posts here, is it safe to say that you are not of that opinion? Do you believe that the D850 focuses just as fast as the D500?

Thanks for your valued input.
Best

ps: Also, thanks for sharing the great shots.

I basically sold my brand new d500 and switched over to the d850 very happy I did. Availability has been a big issue but Bedford Camera has come through for any number of us who belong to the Facebook d850 page.
