I have made comments about threads like this before and you could call me a conservative. An old camera takes as good shots as a more modern one if fitted with a good lens. It all depends on the operator, not the camera.

I have no experience with the D3, I do not use professional cameras nor is my intention to use them in the future.

I am pretty familiar with Ron Magill a Nikon Ambassador and official photographer of the Miami Metro Zoo. In one occasion and while I was shooting at the Zoo he said hello and showed me in his cell phone a picture of a tiger he has shot with the D3 in India at ISO 12,000 something. He told me that picture saved the day because it was shot late in the evening and still there was little noise and the image was pretty sharp. I do not know what he is using today but he spoke enthusiastically about the old camera.

None of my cameras sport new technologies and I am very satisfied with the quality of images I get when I do my part. The gentleman that originated this thread had the D3 in mind. I am quite sure that 12Mp. were more than enough for him like they are for a large proportion of photographers and all he needs now is good glass to compliment such a great camera.

As Jack Dykinga has said, "Concentrate on technology and your pictures will be technologically excellent. Concentrate on seeing the nuisances of light and your pictures will stir the soul."

Interesting--I have a professional photographer friend (a thirty-year real pro who goes on assignments for big-time clients) who gave up on Nikon and moved to Canon because of frustration with the equipment.

I love my D3. It's a hefty thing but image quality is outstanding. I don't see how anyone could consider purchasing a good camera as going backward. No video or Bluetooth but I don't need that. Plus, I am able to use all my good FX lens from my FM2 days in addition to newer ones I use on my DF.

I also use an F5 and Leica M3 occasionally, antiques by most standards, but I was tickled to get them and they still produce fine images.

I say learn all you can about it and enjoy your D3.

I have a D3, and I love it; it took a fair amount of time to find onee in mint condition, but it was well worth the wait!

Can’t say--it was within the last few years.

The D3 is an obsolete camera and not comparable to modern cameras. A very odd choice. Your decision will forever remain a mystery other then maybe it was cheap. You made someone's day when you took that off the shelf.

My feelings are that if you are vested into canon or nikon that is where you will stay. It would cost me a lot of bucks to sell what I have and enter into another system that may provide little or no advantages.
If I do make a change it would be going from the Mark 3 to the Mark 4 and that would cost me about $1500 so I will stay where I/m

Its about time that some of us realize that many of the older cameras will do everything we need in photography. I still use and am happy with the D700 (the light weight model of the D3). The latest and greatest cameras aren't always needed to take none commercial pictures. Maybe some day the OP will choose to buy something newer, but it won't be because the D3 isn't getting the job done.

You understand, of course, the Nikon D3 is a 12MP professional-grade full frame DSLR announced by Nikon in August 2007? Assuming you meant the original EOS 1Ds, that was a full-frame 11MP DSLR released in September 2002. Current top technology from Nikon (D5) sports 21MP at 12 fps and Canon with their 1DXII comes at 20MP and 14 fps. Given your expressed interest in a D810, it would seem you could have realized more benefits by going more modern in your selection of equipment ....

I have a D810 and am very pleased with the quality of photos that I get. I shoot mostly action nature and some landscape.

Good luck with your switching systems to nikon. I tried to move to Sony from Nikon. That switch just didn't work for me. I just purchased the Nikon D850 this camera is like an old lost friend in my 30 plus years of holding nikons. Good luck enjoy you new equipment. Happy Holidays

Interesting. You already made the change and now your asking about the quality? One would hope you did you homework before the change. I would suspect nikon fans will say good move, Canon not so good, and mirrorless fans wondering why you going backwards.

Good luck and I hope it all pans out!

Yep...

The best camera in the world is always that which is most reliable and gives you the pictures you like. Discussing Canon vs Nikon is time wasted that could be used to take better pictures. CLICK!

Wow, a lot of this topic sounded more like a political argument!
