Wow, I must have had beginner’s luck then with my first dslr. Caught a great one in St. Lucia with the Pirates of the Carribean ship in the frame.

Atmospheric conditions must be just right though...a low horizon, mostly cloudless sky on horizon and perfect timing. They don’t call it a flash for nothing.

I’m a sailor who married a Captain (Master all ocean/all tonnage) so the flash is nothing unusual for us.

You and Chris Mannerino have all the luck. My wife is a travel agent/owner and as many times as she and I have watched the sunset we have yet to see or capture one. Still your shots really do give me hope that we will see one some day. Both of you have exceptional shots of the green flash.

I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to the crooked horizon and lack of watermark driving me nuts now.....and too late to edit here.
Which brings me to my next question...
Is there no way to delete old posts here in UHH without asking the Admin?

Excellent! That could be a new comic book hero. We have The Flash and The Green Hornet. Now we can The Green Flash. : )

Never saw that before. Great shot. My question: "did you see the green with eyesight, or did it show up just in-camera?"

Rick's Cafe in Negril Jamaica is one of the 7 best places in the world to capture the green flash. The water has to be calm as glass and for one split second when the sun drops below the horizon you can catch it as the ocean refracts it. Have your camera in highest speed rapid fire and you might get lucky. I did not believe it either until one night I saw it. Years ago I tried with a Nikkormat, tripod and cable release.
In the instant you pressed the shutter you just missed it. Nice shot not your typical one either.

Fantastic capture Chris! Jims203 is right! Way back in the 70's, I read about the green flash in Peterson's and finally captured it from the lighthouse further up the hill from Rick's. Minolta XE-7 and pure luck! Still have it...the camera, not the luck

I've seen it several times, and got a video once. I will try again this Friday. I hope to be out at Newport Beach here in California, so may try again. By the way, for those who live here in California, there will be a rocket launch from Vandenberg Friday night, about 5:25 or so. Sometimes they can be rather spectacular, both visually and photographically. Easily visible within 100 miles or more.

Rocket launches can be very exciting at Vandenberg. Was assigned there in the 392nd Comm Squadron back in 1979.

I lined on a sail boat for nine years and sailed from Baltimore to Guyana and have seen eleven green flashes at sunset.
All that's needed is a clear horizon and an inversion layer to refract the light.
Congrats on capturing one; I'd like to hear how you did it.
