Is a Pan/tilt head necessary?

Thanks longshadow. I just took a look and it seems to be a very sturdy head. It a 10 lbs. weight capacity, should be enough to support my gear.

Do you see yourself setting this up and be confident nothing will flip over?

Hi the 7Dmkll is an excellent choice for sports shooting... I use a "MONO POD", for stability as well as panning for action shooting. The Tilt & Elevation ball head, is more used on a tripod for stills, in my studio. The mono pod with a panning head is all you need.

The OP's lens has a rotating tripod collar - there would be no point in flopping the whole lens/camera combination over for a vertical shot.

I’m at the stage in my life that I’m not confident that I can stand without falling! If anything I am overly protective.

Thanks Lee, I’m looking at the Sirui VH-10 which really looks good and has a very high weight cacacity.

It was directed at PHRubin, surmising that he had a tripod since he didn't care for the ball head for his application.
Correct, you can't effectively use a tilt/pan head on a monopod, not enough arms.

Yea, I don't have enough arms to use a tilt/pan head on a monopod!
I can't imagine anyone trying that...

You just need a tilt. No swivel required on a monopod. If you are looking at a Sirui head, the L10 requires an Arca-Swiss compatible clamp on the top of the monopod. The L20S has a standard 3/8-16 threaded socket. This is still within your budget. The L10 has a lower load capacity as well. I'd suggest you get the L20S.
