Anyone Regretting That They Bought The Nikon D850?

I got my name on the list at Roberts in Indianapolis about 45 minutes after it was announced for preorder. but, after 2 months it did not come, so I started to check around. I found one locally that was not spoken for and had it in a couple of hours... it was an ok camera... certainly nothing to write home about. Every shot was just a bit out of focus even after doing all that I could to make it sharp. So I took it back to where I bought it (Procam in Livonia Michigan) they took one brief look at the images that I had shot and said, yes it has a problem. We will take of you but we dont have anouther one in stock. Two hours later, I was not even home yet because of the long drive, and I got a call telling me that nothing was wrong, and they refused to return the camera for a refund. If that was taking care of me, I would hate to see what beating me up and leaving me along side the road would be like. So I kept shooting with it, determining what was actually wrong with it so that I could call Nikon and get it fixed since returning it was not an option. I found that the AF mechanism in continuous AF was broken. So I called nikon, they wanted pics, sent them what they wanted and two minutes later they told me to send the camera in. When I got it back it was a whole new camera... same serial number so they did not replace it but they did replace the AF mech. I now see richer images, perfect focus, just all around one of the best cameras that I have had in the past 50 years.

I wanted to sell it before it was fixed but in good conscience could not.... now, I would never sell it. The camera may have more noise than we would like, but after what I have seen, and read, I think that our expectations for this high ISO camera have become unreal... no it is not a D3 or D700 for ISO, but try and shoot those cameras above 25,600 and compare... I dont think that you would be very happy with either of them. If we keep the iSO under 6400 which is where 99% of images are shot, I dont think that you would have an issue... if so, then maybe something has gone wrong and it needs service.

The D850 is a great camera, but it certainly is not any more a high ISO camera than your flagship models! Just my opinion.

The D850 will survive, just as other newly released cameras. Even the D5 had some criticism when it first came out. A $6500 camera. I'm guessing there will be new future firmwares to the D850. Some shortcomings may not change. A reality one may have to accept. Or buy another camera. Maybe a 24 megapixels D750?

I had a D850 on preorder for an extended period and finally cancelled the order. I have a Sony A6000 and A6300 with APC Sony G & Zeiss Glass which I found myself using frequently and led me to start seriously exploring the Sony A7RIII on YouTube and other sources... I purchased an A7II to see if it was something I would really like and I do. After a lot of internal struggle, I will be purchasing an A7RIII in January instead of a D850. I'm heavily invested in Nikon Cameras, Lenses and Gear, however, it looks like I will be adding some more Full Frame Sony and Zeiss Glass. I plan on keeping my D810m, DF and D500's (x2) and most of my Nikon Glass.

Nikon seems to have a strong fan club here. Just now I posted about the a7Riii's DxoMark scores - it gets exactly the same total score as the D850, but distributed differently. In particular, the Sony is fourth in the "sports" score, which measures "useable" ISO value. Above it are two medium format cameras and a 12MP Sony.

The other day, someone created a post with a You Tube Video comparing the Pentax K-1 to the Nikon D850. These comparisons are interesting. But not always conclusive to the decision making of buying. I'm not saying the K-1 is not an excellent full frame camera. It is. I'm saying the D850 will outsell it.

I know, but I didn't want to be rude, after all he is a new member. I realize there is a world out there past Nikon and would never knock another members choice of equipment after all it is about the photographer not his equipment and as we know the manufacturer's equipment tends to leap frog as to who is top dog.

I've owned one since it was first released. I'm still playing around with it. I'm starting to notice a great deal of noise at higher ISO which I don't get with my D750 and D5. Just saying.

Any regrets for you?
No regrets. I'm learning the camera after having it a month and a half, but I'm favorably impressed. A for high ISO, the attached photo was taken at a band rehearsal at ISO 12,800. Hand held Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 at 170mm. 1.125 @ f/7.1. Personally, I think the noise level is acceptable for that ISO and can easily be improved with a bit of noise reduction in Lightroom. There is NO noise reduction used in this photo and only slight sharpening.

It is noisy, but acceptable. I shot the neighbors house at night for Christmas decorations at ISO-5000 and it was quite noisy.

Just a double. A bit emphatic at best.

I was just wondering, what did you have high noise reduction set at? Mine was set at Normal when shooting at ISO-5000, I wonder if there would be a difference shooting it at High.

I’m seeing a surprising number of D850 “for sale” ads.

I am not the least bit surprised. Like many "tech" items, the law of diminishing returns applies. The difference in image quality between a $250 point and shoot and a $500. entry DSLR will be far more noticeable than that between a $1000.00 enthusiast model and a $4000 pro version. I suspect that some casual snapshooters and beginning hobbyists with deep pockets buy a D850 or similar model expecting to become the next Ansel Adams and are bitterly disappointed. In other cases an older user whose vision is less than perfect, might fail to notice the subtle differences between his D7200 and the D850, especially if he only prints 5x7 photos or views them on the computer monitor.

I think it would be great if the D850 was capable for you to manually pick how many pixels you want to use for any given situation.

I know there is the capability to chose full RAW at 45.7 MP, medium RAW (mRAW) at 25.5 MP and small RAW (sRAW) at 11.3 MP. But maybe I want 40 MP, 35 MP or 20 MP? I wonder if Nikon could give you this option, by firmware adjustment?
