Can you provide details on why your friend made this suggestion? Do you already subscribe to the CC or are you trying to make a decision on which software to start with?

Windows or Mac?
Nikon or Canon?

Everyone has a certain type of experience on anything and will use that to recommend whatever.

Download the trial version of both and select what seems to work for you.

Any advice toward or another is biased and not worth the time to type it when it comes right down to it.

Good advice: "Download the trial version of both and select what seems to work for you."

try darktable. it is 100% free. Free to modify and free to own. http://www.darktable.org/2017/08/darktable-for-windows/ it was made for linux but it has both a windows and mac port. if you need more basic learn GIMP. It too is free.

Capture One is a very good raw converter - so it is more like ACR or Lightroom. I prefer C1 to Lr for a few reasons. But Ps is a pixel level editor - that can do many more things than either Lr or C1. Your friend is misinformed and confused. Regardless of which raw converter you use, there is still a need for a precision pixel editor to be able to properly finish the image. Raw converters are not intended for finishing - but they are amazing at making proof quality images in record time with incredible ease.

Would you, possibly, post an image after MR and after PS so that me and others on the steep up side can visualize what your saying. Please

You may not need the functions but PS is light years stronger than Capture PERIOD in areas too many to cover to include down to the pixel level. It's like a Smart car vs a luxury limo with a driver, both will get you to the store. PS before they tucked it into CC etc, was a $500-600 alone product. And getting both for $10 a month is the best bargain around.

I am very happy with Capture One, which offers a substantial discount if you have Sony equipment, but I cannot offer a blow-by-blow comparison with LR because I have not used it. I also do not use PS, but it is often recommended for finishing touches after using either C1 or LR for raw conversion and basic adjustments, especially for professionals or others who sell their work (I don't). It depends in part on how much time and effort you want to put into editing. I am usually satisfied with the final results of just the C1 adjustments.

Experimenting with both C1 and LR/PS during their free trial periods may be useful, but I would caution that both have pretty steep learning curves that take time to get comfortable with. A less onerous and quicker alternative may be to view a few of the many Youtube videos on each program to get an idea of their respective capabilities and limitations. The C1 website, among others, has good how-to webinars, and there are tons of instructive videos on LR and PS. Some reviewers do provide comparisons of these and other editing programs, although the quality and objectivity of the reviews should also be considered. You can start by just Googling post processing programs.

How less onerous free can be?

If you are talking about time.... At least half of the time spent to compare trial versions is not lost since a program will be (hopefully) selected. As to you tube to compare? Not a good idea at all. You either have all out commercials for both programs or more or less competent folks offering tutorials. YouTube videos do not present capabilities or limitations of any program but the skills (or lack of it) of the presenter.

Now the amount and quality of tutorials can be a factor when making decision.

I apologize over this reply but one has to say what is what when it comes to making a choice. I just felt that some elements of your post where misleading.

IMO Capture one is one of the best RAW converters out there if not the best, However if you want to do more with your photos Like add special effects it stops there, I suggest you look at Topaz Studio or Luminar if you want to do more with your photos, Both these programs will work with RAW and JPG images and not near confusing as Junkroom CC.

C1 is NOT a substitute for PHOTOSHOP. It is a great raw converter and has features better than Lightroom IMO, but just like Lightroom or ACR, you have to send the image on to Photoshop for serious work. You CAN make a case that C1 is an option for Lightroom, but not for PS.

Well said and Luminar is now better that Photoshop with all the adjustments they have IMO, I'm not talking about any presets.
