Trying to learn Photoshop

I am determined to learn how to use Photoshop. I am a subscriber to the Adobe CC and know my way around Lightroom pretty much but have completely avoided PS. So today I got out the Book and started to get into it. The attached picture was taken at the local zoo yesterday but was shot through glass. I used PS ( scratch and dust filter as well as the content aware healing to remove scratches on the glass as well as reflections. All comments and critiques are welcome ( its the only way I will learn)

You're off to a great start. PS is a powerful tool. It can be daunting, but taken a little at a time it can become your best friend.

You may find you will get better results if you eliminate most of the glass scratches and reflections while you're shooting by putting your lens right up against the glass. Then you should have much less to deal with in PhotoShop. ........ Coot

I learn PS when I pick projects and figure them out, just like what you did. Good job. Lots of practice and you keep getting better at it.

I've been editing zoo images all afternoon, including African cranes shot through a fence on a cloudy day. I don't see any evidence of corrections of scratches, you've done a great job on this adjustment. But, your colors and contrast see rather drab. I find LR much easier for adding punch to the image.

Assuming you have the image in LR, try the following adjustments in LR and see what you think. They're not right or wrong, rather seeking to bring more color and contrast to the image given the window and lowlight.

Consider taking it into LR and using the Dehaze adjustment. Might help. There are a hundred ways to skin this cat in either PS or LR. Good chance here to play with some of them.

Two thoughts on your shot;
1)in PS increase your contrast in CURVES, not in contrast / brightness (you can easily loose details in the hi light in C/B) but in curves you will also see by doing the contrast it will increase your color saturation, if it becomes too much you can change the Saturation with replace color on any part of the pix....all in "Adjustment". Then there is the Saturation adjustment as well, plus in the different color R,G,& B. There so many ways to make changes. Go to Adobe PS and watch their training videos !
2)try that kind of shot Verically so you don't crop the top.

Thanks Coot. I have done that and it works but in this case the bird was right up against the glass so I couldn’t get that close and still focus

Thanks Sandie. I find that I have to stick with it to learn it and projects like this are a great way to keep at it

Thanks chug Canon I also felt that the colors were drab and I should fix in Lightroom where I am comfortable working. I was using the pic as a learning experience for PS. I took nearly 200 shots at the zoo yesterday and I am anxious to process them in LR and PS many were through fencing were I had to use manual focus to eliminate the fencing. Hope to post some soon. Thanks for your comments

Thanks Eddie. Now that I have the glass and scratches out, I will take the image back to LR to enhance the colors. Appreciate your taking the time to look and comment
