I think core Trump supporters have been angry, marginalized people who felt cheated by our government. They perceive favoritism to others who don’t deserve the benefits they receive. At the same time they continue to feel like outsiders in a country they love just as much as we do. They are strong on individual responsibility and feel like recipients of social support programs are lazy takers. They had no voice until Trump. They want to believe the lies he continues to assert. They want a return to an America that no longer exists in this increasingly competitive world. They are willing to tear a apart society just to punish a country that they feel left them behind.

"They are strong on individual responsibility" Wouldn't that have included doing the tiniest bit of research on the candidate before voting for him. I don't believe there is anything in his history at all that should have left anyone believing he would be for the working man.

The ppl who did research Trump know Trump would never do anything if it didn't give Trump the advantage. I'll bet he'd throw his own family under the bus...maybe except Ivanka.

His lies throughout the nearly 16 month campaign were believed as gospel truth by trump's followers.

Those lies are now coming back to haunt not only his followers, but they're now haunting trump.

"Lock her up" has now turned into "Lock him up!"

He was met with this chant in NY, and likely believes the chant is for Flynn, when it's actually for trump.

We have seen his base erode as his favorability rating sank to an all time low for any president since they started keeping records of polls.

He might get a slight bounce out of the Tax Reform bill, but once they realize what the tax plan will actually do for low and middle income tax payers, the outcry will be swift and loud.

How many protest marches will there be, especially on Washington?

But the real results will occur in the ballot boxes in 2018, and 2020. We're going to see a REVOLT against the GOP.

We will see and huge swing away from GOP candidates, and to major support for Democrats from the Local Level right on up through the Federal Level.

The tax bill is going to bankrupt our country.

Corporate shareholders will not want their profits put into hiring new employees, or investing back into their companies, they're going to want higher stockholder payouts.

There is no penalty for using robots to replace human workers.

There is no provision for retraining human workers who were replaced by robots.

Outdated occupations are being replaced by new technologies and robots on a daily basis.

We saw this last year with the coal industry, and trump's lies about bringing back coal as a "Clean" energy alternative. That's never going to happen, and those out of work coal workers refused retraining based solely on trump's lies. Now they're out of unemployment benefits, and basically can't find new jobs to support their families.

The tax bill won’t bankrupt the country, just the lower 99% of it; the others will do just fine until they start looking for someone to fight their wars for them.

That wasn't the intended interpretation. By individual responsibility I meant that the core Trump supporters believe you do what needs to be done for yourself andnot depend on a central government to do it for you. That fierce independence wanting to cut Medicaid - as in, oyou need to take care of yourself and not burden oyther citizens with your problems. It is not about researching Trump... Trump said the words they wanted to hear, there was no need to research the accuracy of his statements.... they are believers in his message.

Then I believe they only think they are big on individual responsibility. Anytime anyone offers you an unbelievable deal you shouldn't believe it.

I'm not defending their opinions, I'm just stated my interpretation of their self-pronounced beliefs in response to a question. I think you need to go back and look at the original post and view it as a whole and not select out individual points and then attempt to debate them. This isn't a debate; I'm not defending them or their beliefs.

It seemed as though you were explaining that they are not deplorables. If that's not defending them, it is at least in the same neighborhood. Before getting excited, it was only said that half were deplorables.

People have no idea of the cost of medical treatment nowdays. I know a man with a simple case of Bladder Cancer, receiving an itemization where one line said: “amount that may be billed to you...$40,000.” Only the richest could cut a check for that amount. The rest of us sell the house (selling out the wife and kids) or declare bankruptcy—meaning, leaving it to others to pay the bill.

I met a farmer who somehow ended up under his plow, had his shin bone crushed, had three surgeries in three days to clean out the bone fragments, then had the choice of amputation or titanium rod to replace his shin bone.

He took the titanium shin bone, recovered splendidly, and was charged $120,000!

No individual can afford that, except the cream of the most wealthy.

I rarely find another person to be deplorable but agree that some do exist. I despise Trump; he is a “deplorable” in my opinion. Some of his core supporters here are totally supportive of him but that doesn’t make them deplorable if they present their reasons in a rational way - some do. Others who just respond with racist, homophobia, and just plain foul responses lacking any substance are “deplorable”.

However I can disagree with someone who believes differently and still respect them as individuals when they act fairly and maturely.

Respect is not agreement. I’m not close to agreeing with their positions so, I am in no way close to defending their opinions. BUT, I can pay them the respect they deserve for holding true to their values while refraining from the abusive tactics some use.

The cost of healthcare is a separate issue and not directly part of my serious concern with Republican efforts to cut Medicare and Medicaid.

The intent of cutting medical care support just to reduce expenses in one government program so another can be increased (like the defense budget) is unconscionable. That is the issue, at least to me.

The HMOs and related providers and organizations are a powerful lobby and Congress gladly accepts their campaign contributions and support. That aspect of American politics is badly broken and unlikely to be fixed in the near future. As a result and I hate to say it, our country is heading towards oligarchy. I’m fortunate in many respects and I hate to see the lives of the less fortunate made harsher by the unbridled greed of some members of our society.
