The ability to use non OS software to download photo seems to be lost.

I have same issue - Nikon software won’t read directly from sd card on my Mac. I have to save photos (in a folder to keep separate) onto desktop and then import into Nikon transfer.

I have been using my iPhone mostly for photos since I got back from a trip to North Carolina in August. Yesterday I tried to download some files to my computer as I normally do and got the following message. I haven't tried Lightroom yet as I don't use Lightroom when all I want to see is if the focus point is where I aimed. If it is then I go to Lightroom and load the files. Has anyone else got this message?

I had a D(h)ell 15" Inspiron earlier this year - I used it for 3 months and then got rid of it.The Windows 10 software had a learning curve, but I did like it. It worked well - just different. A great improvement on prior releases. However, the hardware was buggy and had the worst trackpad I have ever used. I had to use a corded mouse to make it usable. Maybe I should have tried a Lenovo. I have had Macs for almost 15 years and like them a lot. Only minor issues typically easily fixed with telephone support or at Genius Bar! D(h)ell support was sub-optimal. What would make me move to another manufacturer is not the OS (at this point in time) but the inability (built in obsolescence) to upgrade the devices. I have a 2013 MacBook Air with a 256 SSD and it still runs like it state of the art. Upgrading it is difficult. Affinity continues to work well - just wish Affinity had a DAM.

Yes! More people are used to dealing with the hosts of problems that develop with them.

Operating Systems evolve, old software does not. The fix is easy.

Insert SD card into reader, open a finder window and copy the images to a folder on your Mac. I always copy to a "Photos to Import" folder. Pretty self explanatory.

If your phone is tied to the cloud, its photos will go there automatically and are available to do whatever you want with them. I do it all the time.

OS10.13.1 has problems with reading a memory card with nikon files especially if it starts running time machine when you put in your card. If you eject the card and re-boot the system it should see them ok without altering them. If it still shows up with a question mark instead of a regular display Lightroom can still import them from the card. Don t bother running a image recovery program on them as that is not the problem. It all worked fine before the High Sierra upgrade. Apple caused the problem.
Usually ejecting shutting down and turning off the computer and trying again seems to work.

Easy answer: new iPhone default picture is stored in HEIF (not jpeg. In settings you can change camera to take jpeg.) This is an older storage format that Apple has chosen to implement. Virtues of this format are 10 bit color, instead of 8, which means a larger color gamut and a little smaller file size as well! It would be better all around IF our normal cameras also used it and our programs like Lightroom also understood and could use it but they do not.

If you have not changed your camera settings you can open the file in Apples Photos and export it as a jpeg, or get a program (their are a few) to convert it back to jpeg.

If it is really as great as advertised maybe some software may implement it, and conceivable since our newer cameras are so software driven, maybe get an update to also deliver HEIC from the raw image coming from our sensors.
