Why Don't Birds Collide with Each Other?

On occasion, they DO collide. I saw some Canadian geese in their usual "V" formation flying over Virginia Lake here in Reno, NV. One of the birds in the back of the formation swerved into the bird ahead of him and they both fell a few feet, then regained their places in the formation. I don't know if our local air controllers reported the mid-air collision, or if the FAA got involved.

Here's a short clip of one of those amazing starling formations. As one group heads into another, it IS incredible that birds don't collide.

Actually Jerry, they do act like people driving cars on the expressway. We had a mummuration over our pasture last year...took a picture and my wife (sleepy drdr) printed a picture and put a grid on it and counted birds in random grid squares.

About 1200 birds.

Well, being a doctor she had the proverbial bone and wouldn't let go.

Research has shown that a bird concentrates on the position of 5 or 6 birds around them 3 or 4 in front of them and a few to each side...just like we do when driving in traffic...and reacts accordingly.

How the birds do that is the real question...because they couldn't get the birds fill out the questionnaires they had prepared.

I've always wondered what happens to birds that are afraid of heights.

I personally have not seen any of them collide but if, and I say if they did, who would they report the accident to? Do they have their own little insurance company? Do they stop and exchange information? If there was any damage, where would they go to have it fixed, and how long would it take? Just curious you know. Oh, and if there were no collisions, who would they brag to?

Curious how most here are responding to the collision question and skipping comment on the absolutely mesmerizing, haunting, even frightening movements of all those birds. Beautiful video. Glad at least that they haven't found my feeders...yet....
