BBF and RC Remote

With my Sony Alpha cameras, I always use back button focusing (As I did with my Nikons). When I finally got around to purchasing a Vello radio remote release, I never thought much about it. Then the first image came back and the focus was bad. And again. And again. (Sometimes I can be a slow learner.) By using BBF, I was turning off the auto-focus triggering which is tied to the "half-push" of the shutter button.

Of course I can go to full manual, focus and that would work, but not if the subject moves and I need to refocus.

I set up the BBF exactly as Friedman recommends which is exactly as Busch recommends which is exactly as two Youtubes do. And it makes perfect sense knowing the menu switches.

So. Does anyone else have this problem? If not how do you set up BBF to avoid it?

Are you saying that when you use the remote the camera refocuses?

With my Sony Alpha cameras, I always use back butt... (show quote)

This seems to be typical of most cameras. Camera makers will have to adapt. In the meantime, turn off AF on camera or lens after you focus with the back button.

Generally BBF is used with the camera set to servo continuous for subject tracking while the button is pressed, when released the focus is locked as in single servo. So in this case since your subject isn't moving focus using the BB then release it when you've got what you want in focus, if the subject then begins to move press the BB again to continually focus while tracking.

No. It refuses to focus. But I get your point. If I focus ahead of time, it should hold that focus. The problem arises when the subject moves and if I were holding the back button, it would refocus properly. If I was using the focus on the shutter release, it would focus correctly. But with BBF it doesn't do either.

Exactly. Except that I'm using the remote release and so can't press the BB again.

It's not too important as long as I remember that it is a limitation and figure out a work around. Just hoping someone smarter would have solved the problem for me. LOL

thanks, although I use BBF and remote release, my subjects are 99% static so I haven't run into your problem. This is good information to keep in mind.

What remote release are you using, the Vello Shutterboss II I have will focus on half press of it's shutter release, I'll have to test to see if it will track in continuous if it's shutter release is held at half press and the subject is moved.

Shut off BBF temporarily and go back to autofocus on shutter button.
