Frustrating experience and a question.

I'm on my second factory refurbished D5500 from B&H and still not set.
The first one worked for bout a dozen shots at home, then I was off to the veterans day ceremony for a shoot. I got an error message on the first shot and it never made another picture. B&H promptly replaced it and this one seems to be working fine, except I can't get the exposure bracketing to work. This is a feature I used often on my D80, and I want it. I set it up exactly like a tutorial video shows, but still only one snap. I tried it in aperture and shutter priority modes. Question: Can I have something else set wrong to prevent this from working? I would hate to send it back to B&H and the problem be me. I wouldn't want to discourage anyone else from trying refurbs as many of you have had good luck with them, but if I have to return it I think I'm through with refurbs. Back to the drawing board. RATS!

Stupid question but what drive setting are you using? If I recall correctly from my D810 days, if you are set on single shot (S) you have to manually trip the shutter for each of your exposure brackets. If you are in one of the continuous modes, the bracketing will happen automatically (as long as you hold the shutter button down). If I'm mistaken, I apologize. I sold off my Nikon gear a couple of years ago.

I hope this helps!

Please forgive me, but what does the manual say?

I understand where you are going with your question (RTM), but in this case it's not really fair. I ran into this same exact issue with my d810 and it was a head scratcher. If the drive mode is really the OP's issue, the manual doesn't tell you to change the drive mode as it works in any drive mode. You just have to understand -how- it is working.

My D7000 was different in many significant ways from my D610 and D810

I'm with bratliff. I set my Nikon D700 to Continous High and hold the shutter button down. The camera knows how many bracketed shots are called for and will take that many shots and quit. On occasions where I have accidentally left bracketing on I get strange exposures with no apparent cause. Until, of course, I notice that bracketing has been left on.

With my D5100 & D5300 I have found that certain functions are greyed out on the main menu if you have certain settings enabled. It’s difficult to determine which settings or modes to use to get other functions without trial and error.

I found the problem. It was the dummy. The S showing in the setup was for single frame. After almost giving up, you guys got me to delve into it again. Thanks.

I don't have an answer but some of the menu items conflict or don't work for various reasons. True on all these cameras. There is just so much going on. You really NEED to buy Darryl Young's book on Mastering the Nikon D5500. I've had similar anomalies on my Nikons and on my Sonys.

I resolved such a problem on a couple occasions by doing a factory reset (It's in the manual), then making one setup change at a time. When it stopped working, I knew I had the key issue.

I've never had a bad "Nikon Factory Refurbished" camera, but all three words are needed (There are third-party refurbishers who are not as good.)

I have also seen people trying to bracket and the bump up against the aperture and less often the shutter speed limitations... I am glad the OP got it figured out.

Best,
Todd Ferguson
