And check out the Peak Design's Slide Strap (on sale today at 20% off). Once you get those Red/Black tabs on all of your gear you will never look at anything else. And it does not bounce when slid to your rear hip area and you are walking. The Peak Design Slide is similar to the OP/TECH (which I think is made in the USA if that matters) but has two attachment points that seem to orient the camera with it's lens pointed more toward the ground than the OP/TECH. It does require an Arca-Swiss style attachment (that is included) at the bottom of the camera body for the second attachment that can also be used in an Arca compatible tripod head. And most L-Brackets most would have places to attach the required Red/Black quick release tabs.

I have 2 Firestraps. They are great - it’s a small USA company, they strap to the lugs not the tripod screw, and they’re very comfortable. I’ve hiked with only that carrying my FF and a medium sized lens (24-85), and I’ve done weddings of many hours with a FF mounted to a 70-200 f2.8 on one strap and a smaller rig on the second strap. Never a problem.

I never "carry" a camera by a strap - AND, I do not recommend it - tho, I may use a "tether" strap when in actual USE. For me, the camera/lenses are carried in soft cases - usually Tamrac - that can be fitted to a belt and/or a shoulder harness.

But, if you are a fashionista, you probably will not like this - oh well ....

Tamrac made a nice BIG case for carrying a camera with a good sized lens #5630 that I highly recommend - has provision for a large belt and D rings for attachment to a harness - visit ebay and you may find one ......

I am looking for a more ergonomic strap for my Canon 80D. My current neck strap seems to bother my neck after walking for awhile. I looked at the Firestrap for $39. I would appreciate some advice, as I am new and transitioning from a point and shoot compact camera.

I use Black Rapid sling straps. I have a Sport, a Sport Left, and a dual (for two cameras).

My cameras all have custom plates/L-brackets. I use an Arca clamp to attach to the camera bottom or lens (if the lens has a tripod collar). The sling strap screws into the Arca clamp. This way, I can quickly remove the strap to mount the camera on a tripod or hold strap free.

There are cheap copies of the Black Rapid slings; I used to have some. But I have read enough reports of mechanical failure of the hinge, so I upgraded to Black Rapid and got rid of the copies. If you shoot a small format camera (m4/3, for instance), the copies will likely be fine. I do, but I also shoot Nikon FX and wanted to not worry.

BlackRapid Sport and Wrist straps with Really Right Stuff camera plates. I use the RRS military grade snap release on the BlackRapid clip. This snap is a push button release from the plate for changing straps or use on tripod or monopod with Arca mounts.

Best,

One more vote for the Black Rapid and I add in the M-Plate Pro.

I own many sling straps, my favorite is black rapid. That said I usually carry two camera's, in my hand I carry my D500 with 200-500 lens. I now use a spider holster to hold my other camera, a Nikon D810 with 28-300 lens attached. If I sling strapped my D810 it would swing too much cause my hands are holding the D500 with lens. Since the D810 is on my waist I have no shoulder pain. And, the strap allows the camera to go directly from my waist to tripod without having to change the base.

I occasionally see a shooter in a tourist attraction and know full well that my wife would find another husband if I did that. But your work speaks that it works for you, so who cares...

I would also go with Black Rapid. Makes it easy to get the camera up and clicking, but also easy to carry it comfortably and safely. There were questions about carrying a camera by the tripod socket, but that was years ago and I never hear that brought up any more. Seems to have proven out well.

For my Sony alpha cameras, I use Optech. Optech is a little lighter and smaller. The Sonys don't need the larger strap of BR. But the principle is similar.

I have not thought the carry by the tripod socket is an issue with the cameras today, especially with the pro and higher level consumer models. That said I usually have a RRS plate on my camera and that attaches using the tripod socket AND spreads the load to the bottom of the camera body. The plate has a socket for the military grade QR which I love. I am not sure if all RRS plates have this QR socket as it is something they have added in the past few years. But they have other attachment options too. I also use an OpTech plastic clip as a secondary connection for backup security. Even with both of these connections I can connect or disconnect in a few seconds if needed. It gets the advantages of each component in my experience.

Best,
Todd Ferguson
