It used to bother me too, but I gave that up. It's easier than fighting a non winnable battle.

Firefox automatically updated from v56 to the new v57 on my Dell XPS 8700 computer. Firefox Quantum turned out to be a pile of crap, for me anyway. It was slow and unresponsive. I couldn't open my Yahoo or Hotmail emails. I have a number of tabs that open when starting Firefox but it had trouble with those. I did a System Restore to go back to the old version. Of course it updated again with same results since I hadn't changed my preferences from update automatically to notify of updates. Changed the preferences so I'm still using v56 but Firefox keeps bugging me to update.
My Dell laptop notifies me to update to v57 but I'm leery of doing it at this time. Maybe I'll update on the laptop and see what happens. I'll have to set a System Restore point before doing it.

The main thing I like about FF is this menu bar at the top of the screen. I don't get it with Chrome or MS Edge and if it is available, I don't know how to get to it.

I started with Firefox when Firefox got started. The other option was MS and FF was much better. A couple years ago, FF began to choke on all the extra javascript popups and other garbage. I tried Chrome and it ran without the choking. But maybe it is time to try FF again.

The word is "affect" which is an action. "Effect " is a result, not as you used it. You used it as an action.

I updated my Dell laptop to Firefox 57. It acted the same way the desktop acted. Flaky, non-responsive, slow.

That's a settings issue. You need to do two things: Set Chrome or Firefox as your default browser, and go into your default programs in your OS to select your preferred browser.

I read another article about the new, improved Firefox a couple weeks ago and I'm considering giving it a try. I preferred Firefox since Netscape was killed off by M$ giving away IE, but in around 2011 Firefox started having problems managing memory. Or, more accurately, hogging it all and not letting go. I had to switch to Chrome to continue what I was doing with as many as 10-15 tabs open while using other programs as well. Firefox simply couldn't handle it.

I will say I like how Chrome syncs all my devices, but Firefox does that pretty well now, too.

Opera even more of a rocket than before with it's skinny Scandinavian code, Not fat bloat like those discussed here

Discovered it two decades ago. Slow? What are you folks talkin' about?

I have a cousin that works for IBM in the US and he is in the Cyber Security division. Based on their tests, Firefox was the most vulnerable when it came to security. Edge being the least vulnerable. This was almost a year ago, so much may have changed.

This is interesting because TOR uses a modified version of Firefox. TOR, for those who are unfamiliar, is an "onion browser" used to avoid tracking or snooping. All data is encrypted point-to-point and routed through several random nodes scattered throughout the world. Firefox also has a mobile browser that does not use the TOR network but still claims to not allow any tracking (by default it blocks cookies and tracking -- but is not encrypted nor anonymous).

One cannot control browser choice in Cortana. When Win 10 was first issued, it could be controlled. Within months, Microsoft configured it to open in Bing and disallowed other search engines. So, when using Cortana, it will open Bing. Changing default browser will have no impact.
