I so love eBay! In a recent posting, I referred to a recent eBay purchase of a Pentax 645 camera. Well, it arrived last night via USPS. What a freakin' beast! This thing has to be 7 pounds if it is an ounce. With the Pentax-FA 45-85 f/4.5 and a grip full of AA batteries, this sucker is not for the weak :)

Came in nearly perfect condition and, as far as I can tell, works like a champ... all for about $250.

Being mostly new to MF film photography (I am replacing a very old Voightlander Bessa that I used sparingly), but having seen hours worth of videos on YouTube and searched thru the UHH archives, is there any sage advice from the group here for MF film photography in general or for shooting with the 645 (other than working out more to build upper body strength lol)?

I plan to take it out in the next few days and run it through its paces with a few rolls of Ilford HP5+

Yikes, you mean it is heavier than a film Pentax 6x7? I had one of those with a 45mm WA lens at one time.

Be assured the Pentax 645 is an excellent medium format body. The lenses are excellent also.
I used one for several years and it never let me down. Wedding was part of my use with it. Always excellent negatives that could be enlarged to huge sizes.
Yes, it is a heavy camera, well built and will last for years. The price could not have been any cheaper.
Congratulations and enjoy the new camera.

The Pentax 67 is bigger and heavier than the 645.

Sir! You are to be commended in using the Pentax 6x7. Only the physically stout of heart are able to wield those beasts!

For my atonement, I used to haul around the RB67, even handholding that hunk of iron and glass on occasion.

Today, I'm using a Mamiya 645 Pro TL for 645, and a Mamiya C330s for 6x6.

I got to try out a Pentax 645 a number of years ago, but I liked the Mamiya (Super and Pro) for its flexibility.

Recently, and I DO KNOW this a tad off topic, but it is still in the medium format genre, I recently sold my CANON 7D Mark II and one lens, and traded it for a CANON 1V HS in like new condition (from KEH-superb vendor)-35mm film format, as it uses my CANON EF mount lenses, and so forth. It too is a beast and as a 79 year-old with some weaknesses, I often struggle with hauling the beast around, but the film images are worth the effort, especially the FUJI Velvia 50 and Kodak EKTAR 100 images. But I digress!

I also have a Mamiya 645 Pro TL with the auto exposure viewfinder, 45mm f/2.8, 80mm f/2.8 and 150mm f/2.8 Mamiya-Secor lenses, several 120 and 220 film backs/inserts, motorized grip, Metz "potato masher" flash gun, cables, and so forth all of which are in mint condition. Likewise for the FUJI and Kodak imagery!

Sorry for the slightly off-topic comments, but I could not resist the endowsement of the 645 film format.

I have not seen that accessory. However, the 645 comes in several flavors...

Film: the 645 (basic and first model), the 645N, 645NII (both are improvements on the 645 - auto focus, matrix metering, mirror lock up, etc.
Digital: 645D and the 645Z, both of which are wayyy out of my league cost wise :)

Instead of developing a digital back for the various Pentax 645 models
Pentax chose to develop a whole new digital camera- the 645Z.

I have 16 lenses for the Pentax 645 system, so I also bought an adaptor
that allows me to use those lenses on my Nikon cameras.

There is also a "shift" adaptor (which I don't own) to attach those lenses to my Nikons.

If I had Pentax 67 lenses, there is a "Tilt and Shift" adaptor available.

If you get tired of taking and developing film, get a fotodiox adapter to use those lenses on your dslr.
