Is a red line around a lens indicative of its superior abilities, or - is it just a gimmick?

Canon L Series, aside ... some Sigma lenses, plus Rokinon and Samyang ... all seem to sport these concentric oddities ... does it make 'em better, or no?

I draw one on all my lenses, it doesn't seem to help. I believe Canon uses a red line to designate an "L" series lens.

Oh, I see, Bob .... that might do it ...

Actually, a better idea - is those little LED lamps around the inside of the rim .... have you seen those?

You do, huh, Pete .... I'll bet it rubs off easy, huh?

Actually, Pete ... I made reference to the Canon L line in the lead post for this Topic ... this is regarding the Sigma, Samyang and Rokinon lines, only ....

Just a little smart arse humor in the morn... doesn't every manufacturer of different lines of anything use differentiating badges, marks, series etc.. to designate diff. levels of performance. My new wife OLY is really pushing her " PRO " line as an example; Sigma likes to use " Art " to designate superior performance. BTW, the little red bulb on my headlamp does a good job of fishing in the bag at night while the flashing red lamp alerts someone if I happen to be " In The Bag " at night .

The red ring is what makes these lenses superior. When they break off, as they occasionally do, it's time to replace the lens. They're never the same once the ring comes off.

Bob ... I picked up one of these Atomic Beam Tactical Headlight thingies at the drug store one day ... the kind they advertise on TV ... haven't even opened it, yet ... but it occurred to me it'd be an excellent device to use - for foraging thru kit bags in the dark, looking for the right lens, filter, adapter or your spare battery ... only ten bucks - I think it was ... incredible 5000 lux, it says on the package ... so, I guess I'm covered for that ....

Yes, I know about the ART Lenses ... do they have a red line? ... I have two Sigma lenses with a red line ... neither are ART lenses, though ....

I think you're being facetious, Mark .... I doubt a) they will ever break off ... or that b) if they did, they would no longer be superior ....

I'm just trying to figure out why Sigma uses the line on one or two lenses, and not on others ... the EX line, for instance ...

They actually do break off on rare occasions, at least on the Canon lenses. As for the rest, you can decide on your own whether I was being serious or not.

Not having ever purchased an L lens ... I cannot speak for Canon product ...

But, I promise you - the red lines on my Sigma lenses - aren't going anywhere ... I have pics, I'll post them in a bit ... so you can see for yourself ...
