My SO and I recently had this discussion (ahem):
? camera cable to computer
? card reader
? remove card from the camera and insert it in the computer
I remove the cards from the camera, replace them with second set that then get formatted.
The files are than transferred to the computer via the built in or USB card readers.
Those cards are put aside until they are switched with the one in the camera and formatted at that time.

Removing the card from the camera has worked well for me. I also cable from time to time but card to computer is my default. Never had any problems. Using a card reader, IMO, puts one more device in the system that could fail between the card and the computer.
#3, download photos, place card in camera and format.
It's a good idea to save the pictures on a thumb nail also as if something goes wrong with the computer you can loose all your pictures. I had this happen.
I use a USB external card reader because my iMac only has an sd slot and it's located in the back of the monitor. I have the double reader that has slots for my cf and sd cards. After I make sure the pictures are on the hard drives and backed up they go right back into the cameras and are reformatted and ready. Plugging and unplugging cables is a troublesome step as far as I'm concerned.

1. Card in card reader--
2. Copy images to a separate external hard drive
3. Import images to computer ( I import directly into LightRoom)
4. remove card, return to camera.
5. Check images---- format card in camera when convenient (I do this before I use it again--the images are still available should something happen)---
nothing ever does-- Hope this helps
Thanks to all who responded to my post!
Cards are removed from the camera and inserted into the appropriate slot on my computer (it has built-in reader for SD, CF & other cards). An external hard drive automatically creates a backup of the images just downloaded. After confirming that the download and backup were successful, the cards are returned to the camera(s) and formatted.

Camera cable to computer is very convenient, but the USB port is somewhat fragile and can get damaged - which I learned the hard way.
Card readers can remain connected, and it is far cheaper to replace a card reader than a USB port on the camera.
Using a built in card reader on a display, keyboard or in the computer is about the same as using a separate card reader - with fewer points of connection, thus more reliable and less prone to failure.
I recommend the means that best suits you. I use a USB 3 card reader. I will never use a cable to directly connect the camera to the computer.
If I am using SD cards, I will routinely format them with this utility:

Slot in PC for SD cards, USB reader for CF and XQD cards. I copy to both thumb drive and hard drive.
