thank God for getting old. I've passed the time when I think i'm important enough that people want 24/7 access to me. that I need a $600.00 + phone. that I cannot be brainwashed into believing I've got to have one. I have a few really good cameras and a $10.00 tracfone that gets the job done.

I thought like you until I got a computer in my pocket. Unlike the Tracfone I carried around for years in case of emergencies like my car breaking down, the computer in my pocket got me to where I was going in a foreign city without having to unfold a large, detailed map on a windy street corner; it helped me to communicate with someone who didn't speak English by translating my speech into French, Chinese, whatever; it helped me choose where to eat by accessing restaurant reviews. I won't go into the hundreds of other things it helped me to do like finding a clean public toilet, but be happy with your $10 Tracfone and basking in the Luddite smugness of old age. (I'm almost 80.)

Have you checked out Consumer Cellular for their budget friendly prices? Also, you can buy a used iPhone 7+ and put their SIM card in it.

One place the smartphone comes in handy is taking pictures of our 2 year old grandson. As soon as he became aware we would get frowns or worse when I got out the dslr. But his mom takes his pictures all the time with her iPhone, so he just acts natural for the iPhone. I need to upgrade, his mom has an iPhone 7 takes wonderful stills & videos. My iPhone 5 is only good in well lit situations. It also looks pretty good on screen but not so well as an 8x10. Her 7, holds up great enlarged and in dimmer light. I can't stomach adding $25 or more a month to our already high cell bill. I may go for an iPhone SE which has the same camera as the 6, but at the lowest upgrade cost. Would love a 7 or 8, but too much for my budget.

I have an SE which I like mainly because of its convenient size. The bigger screens are nice but a nuisance to carry in a shirt pocket.

The new iPhone X is just a tiny bit larger than the normal phone, but has a screen bigger than the plus models. Of course, it's expensive.

You might want to take a look at the new Pictar grip. It's a little fiddley to set up but it does make a phone more versatile if not generally better for photos.

The best camera is the one you have with you....even if it's your phone!

National Geographic photographers have used earlier iphones (5s and 7) to create beautiful publication quality photographs for their magazine. If we could only create photos of that caliber, while even using a dlsr (or mirrorless), we'd be mighty proud of ourselves.

I hear you. I have seen so many great shots taken with iPhones, etc that I can't even think of getting using my camera. Hey! Maybe that is my hesitation to upgrading my phone. I don't need yet another gadget that I can't use properly.

Amazing what a talented eye can do with an iPhone. ("But just try and make a wall-sized mural from them. No iPhone can match my PhaseOne XF 100MP camera.")
