I agree, my God this is supposed to be fun and a learning experience. I appreciate the experience very much so. I know you meant for anyone who had a camera DSLR or Compact either one does not matter but some people out there just like Drama or to cause drama. That is such a shame. I am excited to get to the next lesson Can't wait. Kuddos to you MWAC

Saddly I'm kind of use to it. There are some here that take pride in taking jabs at me. I have no idea why but it's really not my problem/issue anyhow.

You can find lesson #2 here: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-42355-1.html

I love the lesson it was VERY helpful and by the way I am new to cameras that have more than a shutter button. I have a Fujifilm and amazingly enough was able to find the Aperture and the shutter settings by elimination! Dont let em get ya down. You are doing more good for those of us that are nit wits than those of them that need every detail of every make of camera explained to them. Tell him to buy a throw away and take it to wal mart for processing and he will be fine! LOVE your tutorials. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting and taking time out of your day to teach us less than amateurs how to use our chosen cameras. If you cannot find the shutter controls you need a different camera.

f/stops - Think of them as fractions f1/2.8 is a sider opening that f1/16. When they were set up it was using fractions but the 1/x was dropped just for x. - Dave

Sorry . . . they were not fractions but ratios. Just FYI

A ratio is a fraction, to be pedantic.

My first post. Thanks for the Lesson concept. I hope I'm attaching my files correctly.

I like that you put the settings on the picture. Very cool. How did you do that?

I am new to UHH and just found this. I am trying to read through all the Aperature info. Your pictures helped a lot.

On Sony it is "A" for aperture priority, "S" for shutter speed priority and "M" for manual. Or have you limited participation to only canon and nikon users? What about Panasonic and Olympus shooters?

REALLY? I guess it's true you can't please everyone.

It seems there is a more inclusive way to word things when talking about all camera users.

umm not to be witchy but if you don't like the way I word a tutorial I took time out of my day to write, you could not post in it or better yet take the time to write your own. It simply amazes me that I (or anyone else for that matter) takes time out of their day to do something nice for other members and people find fault with it.

Somedays it just doesn't pay to be nice I guess.

It's impossible to please defensive people. They are always looking for something to criticize. You are doing a great and generous job. Ignore the naysayers.

Thanks for the lessons MWAC, here is lesson 1, and I will be working on #2 soon.

I noticed that changing the aperture also effects the light quality of the picture without changing the EV settings. I also noticed that the higher the F number, the greater the need for a tripod. (I am sure most of you know this, so please bear with me as this is new to me; and I need to remember this when I am out shooting and away from my computer where I can compare the settings better.) It seems to me the higher F number also produces more detail in flowers even though there is less bokeh in the background.

I am using a D3100 Nikon with a 55-300mm lens with VR, AF. My ISO is at 100, EV at 0.00 through out. I noticed at the lowest F value 4.8, I had a vignette effect that wasn't present in F6.3, so I added it too.
Thanks for the lessons MWAC, here is lesson 1, and... (show quote)

I like the color in the first one better.

Keep up the good work and try to ignore any ignorant or arrogant comments that we both know will come at times.

I know, I am one to talk. I have a tough time doing what I suggested but if you don't try you will drive your self crazy. (OK, crazier!) You will never please everyone girl, you know that!

If someone is going to take issue with your wording there is a way to correct that. Forward your posts to that person let them make any corrections needed and send the post back to you for finial review and posting.

Some forget this is a photography forum and not a literature forum.

Hello and thank you for your time on doing this. I have a Nikon D500 but I really don't know what type of lens its but the largest aperture I can get is 3.7 does this make sense? I always learned that F8 was the largest aperture.

f8 is the smallest aperture - the larger the number in f stops, the smaller the lens opening. Your widest opening is probably f2.8 or near that, which is your widest opening!
