But the credit check they perform is reported/recorded, and a large number of credit checks for potential new accounts can negatively affect your credit score.

Credit Card companies have an option to do credit checks for solicitations purposes without the credit check being reflected on the agency's report.

Whoa, so you think anyone who holds an Amazon credit card DESERVES to be potentially defrauded but phishing attacks? Really? Now whether anyone stupid enough to fall for such an attempt deserves what they get is perhaps another question, but I’m guessing that elderly customers, who may not be quite as sharp as you, and have been defrauded, may not agree.

They may have the option, but I can confirm, that after checking my report in detail, there is an entire page of unsolicited checks for solicitations that are recorded. Now how/if that affects our score is a well kept secret by the reporting agencies such as Equifax (don't get me started on the Equifax breach and their unacceptable response).

We get the scam phone calls all the time. We have AT&T phone, computer net, and TV services. We get caller ID on our landlines and on our TV screen. The scammers can mimic phone numbers so they look like legitimate local or 800 numbers. However, they can't fool the AT&T computer. These numbers always show up as either "Unavailable", or "Unknown" on our TV screen. We always know not to answer. We let them go to VM. However, most end the call at the end of three rings.

I used to answer the phone from unknown numbers with "15th Precinct, Detective Sipowitz speaking". Don't know if they knew of the show, or were afraid they got the PD.

Only an idiot would volunteer their private information and there must be enough idiots to keep the phishermen phishing.

Unless the rules have changed, that is not correct. A few years back I had some cards that I have never had ie., Discover, Exxon, and Citgo; appear on a credit inquiry. I never applied for a Discover and had company cards for the latter two. When I questioned the credit agency, I was told that they open an account whenever a card issuer makes a credit check, not when the card is activated. I could cancel the card accounts, but was warned not to cancel too many at one time as it would have a negative effect on the credit rating. Actually any card cancellation has the same effect; they assume you can't afford them, but a lot at one time is an even worse.

All I can say to that total fabrication is B.S.

No one besides me can allow someone to open a credit card in my name.

I received phone call about 7:00 am the other morning. "Michael" from Computer Services had detected a problem on my computer. Told him I had four computers, a Dell, an H-P, a Lenovo and an Asus. Asked which one it was with the problem. Well it's the one running Windows. Told him they all run Windows, so which one has the problem. Well, it's the one connected to the internet. They are all connected to the internet. Then he asked really intelligent question. Are they connected to the same internet? Being smart, I told him I thought there was only one internet that all computers used, then I hung up on him. He wasn't too smart. He called me right back. Said he was just trying to help me. By now I'm through playing with him. I said, I know what you're doing, you're running a bogus scam, just trying to steal money I work hard to earn. Hung on him again and haven't heard from him since.

I just love calling the (Microsoft) number back and when they answer, I just put the phone down til they hang up. After a dozen times or so I stop calling (I get bored) but I dont hear from them for a month or two.

Another alternative is to have your FAX machine call them with the redial set on 100 😎. I’ve done that to a few - makes some of ‘em crazy.

LOL, great idea, but I havent had a landline for about ten years so... no fax.
I've had three printers in that time, all faxes virgin when I gave them away.
I dont have patience for 100 redails, but it sounds excellent for dealing with pests. My technique gets them off my case for 2-3 months. Why dont they at least learn to speak English with an American accent.
