Like Jerry, I don’t care for them as they decrease stability in the same way a centerpost on a tripod decreases stability.

Then, that would assume, Allen ... you've found a tripod that - stat - works exactly at the right height for you - is that it?

Tried a few pistol grips for hand-holding. You can switch hands and trigger from either. None of them were built well enough and didn’t last long. They worked well for a while though. Wish I could find 12 that last on a Canon T5 for work.

Why would you need 12, Goofy?

One wouldn't suffice?

Tell me, Bob ... in what situations, do you see the need for using a pistol grip with your Hassy?

PM me if interested.

Tell me, Roni ... if you don't mind ... how does it connect with the shutter mechanism?

Wow! ... Hey, Bob ... that's some nice get-up ....

But, that's just a device for neatly getting on and off the tripod, right?

I was thinking of that kind of thing that couples to the shutter mechanism, so when you pull the trigger, the "canon" fires - get it?

Thanks, though - for sharing that pic ... really nice setup you have there ...

Sorry Chris, my Canon doesn't fire with this setup nor the Olympus; I guess I misinterpreted what you were alluding to... Anyhoot I have used this for over 10 years and still luv it.

greed?
No.
Part of my job is to manage cameras students check out at the Dental school. Would be advantageous to be able to have one hand free to hold mirrors.

Does anyone here use a Pistol Grip on their camera? ... Does it help?

Yes. I always use a pistol grip on my Canon 400 II DO f4 prime lens and it really helps to steady my shots.

I just use a Slik collapsable monopod.. carbon fiber..hold it right under the camera...extend it when you want a little extra stability.

I didn't think it did, Bob ...

But, still - thanks for sharing that priceless pic ... very educational ... for those who might be looking for such a device ...

I can see why you would love it, Bob ... that's an excellent way to get cameras easily on and off tripods ...

Oh, I seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, Goofy .... thanks for explaining ...

Yes, it would, Goofy ... I can see that ...

Perhaps ... a device to hold the mirror could be attached to the pistol grip?

I see, Regis ...

This would be a device to help you hold the lens, though - right?

There's no shutter actuator on it, is there?

Okay, Rod ...

Again - you're making reference to the type of Pistol Grip MrBob uses ... right? ... (for tripods)

This was intended to uncover the Pistol Grip devices used for shutter actuation ...

Chris,

Ive used one for years and love it for the extra stability it provides. Especially on larger heaver cameras.

Okay, Wiz ... tell me this ... which "larger heavier" cameras do you use it on?

Does it actuate the shutter, or no?

I use these Dolca pistol grips -https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AB4DFH0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

my cameras are the lighter Canon rebels and the largest lens I use is a kit 100-300 - this P.G. tightens enough to Not Droop with this lens and the pistol grip works well in most all of my tripod mounted images - the Quick release plate locks on and off with a push lever and has a set screw to tighten the quick release plate.

No, but I do use my 23 inch long pod from my bodypod - which amounts to a monopod at it's shortest length. I use this in concert with my facial stabilzer - holding the pod against my body for really enhanced stability with shorter/lighter lenses.

Here is another solution - my ground pod used against your chest ......

The groundpod uses a manfro grip action ball head (#222) with QR attached to camera - here shown with a 70-210 lens.

IMO, the pistol grip idea can only be truly beneficial if it is LONG enough to brace against something - like the rest of your body ......or ?
