On a recent vacation, when I ran out of memory in my little Nikon P7800, I discovered I had left the card in my laptop at home! The closest camera shop was 60 miles away on country roads so out of desperation I stopped at a rural farm hardware store and was directed back passed the feed and plow shares to aisle 6 where I found a scant supply of dusty, obsolete cables and connectors in a locked case. And there amongst all that stuff was the last 16gb Duacell Sd card in the county. Ever happen to you? I still have it in the camera and it seems to working O.K. but I did put a back up in my bag.

Meaning no disrespect to any poster I can't believe that some of you seem to only have one card or take one card with you. Cards are so tiny I keep about 10 in my camera bag and the bag goes wherever the camera goes, at least in the vehicle. I can certainly understand leaving the card in the computer but not having back ups is something I have a hard time wrapping my head around.

My camera strap has two items attached to it. On the left is a spare 32gig card in it's little plastic case and on the right is the wireless shutter trigger in it's little case. Only had to cut the tape and use the card one time when I had put a too small card in the camera and hit full too soon.

Many cameras have a menu selection that will allow the camera to function without a card installed! This is to allow dealer demos without actually recording pictures. Important to make sure this is not selected.

When I was young I often made the same mistakes over and over.
As I matured I began to learn from my mistakes, and didn't repeat many mistakes.

Now that I'm older and wiser, I'm (usually) able to learn from a mistake made by someone else.
That has often been of great assistance in life as well as photography.

YMMV

Back-in-the-day, I made an exhaustive checklist for my photo gear. Then,I tried using it. It was a pain becuase it was really detailed. I ended up tossing it. In todays world I have a clear plastic zipper bag (I think bed pillows came in it) that is labeled "Chargers et al" (literally) in which I keep all the wall warts for each camera, all the cables for each camera and adapters for the cables and spare batteries (I have at least one duplicate battery for each camera) and back-up memory chips for each type in a little case. I check the batteries and bring them up to full charge before every trip. It is an extra bag but it fits in my camera backpack with the bodies, lenses et al. Since I have been doing this (after experiences that others have related above) I have never been S.O.L. again. Even though I misplace lens caps (see my posting on "Is YOUR Cap Tethered?" earlier in this session).
