Now that Lightroom is going subscription only - what is the alternative?
I've recently downloaded Alien Skin Exposure X3 and so far it seems to be pretty decent. In fact if you have been using lightroom it all seems very familiar.
Raw development is very lightroom like , the startup tutorials advise using an initial preset, but you don't have to. Looking on the right side there are some familiar looking sliders that work as you would expect them to in lightroom. Everything you would want for raw development is there plus layers plus a lot more.
It doesn't have a catalog but it does have a sensible file structure keywording and great search tools. You can of course use it with lightroom as an external editor and it seems to be far more feature rich than adobe lightroom classic.
I'm hopeful i can avoid the subscription with adobe. Certainly it is worth a look and the development is about the first i have found where i'm as comfortable with it as lightroom. Its well worth getting the trial and seeing if it suits.
I have the Adobe CC for photographers. When I subscribed this was my reasoning: when I shot film, the cost was no less that $15 per roll, with the cost of the film and the developing and printing. And I had no real control for post processing. So, the 120 per year cost is equal to developing about 8 rolls of film, and I continue to have the latest software. For me the cost of the subscription it was a no brainer.
I’m very happy with CC classic. The updates easy use of plug ins and ease of moving between Lightroom and photoshop make the subscription well worth it.
