Shutter Problem Nikon D90

Hello,
I bought a refurbished Nikon D90 about two years ago and have been very happy with it until last week. The problem I have is when I take a picture the shutter stays open for about one-half of a second regardless of the shutter speed that is indicated and required for the shot. The data for the shot will show the shutter speed that I selected, but the real shutter speed is much, much slower than the indicated speed.
Recently I have been reading Darrell Young's "Mastering the Nikon D90," and I have made some menu selections based on what I read in his book. I am hoping that I have made a change that is causing my shutter problem, but I have not been able to find the cause of the problem despite numerous times of reviewing the camera's menus and reviewing the book.
I hope some of my more learned UHH members can help me pinpoint the problem. Thank you in advance for your help.

Do a two-button reset. If that doesn't work, remove the battery, turn the camera on, and hold down the shutter button for ten seconds or so. Let us know how this develops.

Chuck, like all electronic devices a camera can fail. That I have to admit is not very common. A refurb camera has been checked by the importer and before it is sold it goes through a battery of tests to make sure the camera is working to specs. I do not need to tell you that a brand new camera does not go through those tests, at least not here by the importer.
I would do what Jerry suggested first but if that fails you should contact Nikon and they should have the right answer to solve the problem.

Are you sure the shutter is staying open? Are your photos blurry? You may have set the mirror to lock up. Do what Jerry suggested. Seems unlikely it developed the problem overnight. Good luck.

Thank you for your very quick reply. I tried both the two-button reset and your second suggestion of removing the battery, etc. Unfortunately, neither worked, so I will call Nikon and see what they say. Thank you again for your help!

I'm sure they'll have a solution, but consider the price vs a refurb or used camera.

I don't know anything about the D90 but my camera has an option in the menu to delay shutter for a moment to avoid shake, could this be the problem. It wouldn't automatically be reset when resetting the factory defaults.

That camera is 9 years old. And you bought it refurbished 2 years ago. Did you have any idea how many shutter clicks was on that camera? Did you buy it from a reputable Photo Shop, such as ABC. I would suggest you do what has already been mentioned, but this time remove the lens and put on another lens. If that doesn't work, you probably a a shutter repair issue.
