I think, I heard they ran into "soft" rock.
They went deeper into the mountain to find "hard" rock to use.
That's why.
Maybe someone will jump in to confirm or deny.
Well captured!!

I grew up 12 miles from Mt. Rushmore and i'm sure it was the only choice the sculptor had because of the rock formations on the mountain. Depending on the time of day, he isn't always in shadow. Early morning is the best time to photograph the mountain. I really don't like all of the "improvements" they have put in front of the mountain. Messes up photographs. We used to be able to take photos of the mountain without the aisle of flags and all of the concrete, but their idea was to handle the crowds without them destroying the scenery in front of the mountain. Like concrete doesn't destroy the scenery? I do like the trail that goes closer to the monument. That was a good improvement. If you go, be sure to take the trail.

Speak softly and carry a big stick... And for history Roosevelt created the National Parks, so without look at all the Images that would not have been taken..

I find it interesting that TR always seems to be in the shadow of the other three--done on purpose, or coincidence?

It all depends on the lighting!

And, you can always go to Carhenge, which is a short trek away. And, a Nebraska rest area on the way!

You just didn't lift the shadows enough! You must not be shooting with a Sony... ;-)

Beautiful shot, I too like the greenery helping to frame the mountain. But I think the instead of Teddy they should have put either Hamilton or Ben Franklin up there, or even Samuel Adams - he's left a dual legacy for America that we still enjoy both of today.

Thanks, Jack. We made sort of a grand swing through the west--Badlands, Mt. Rushmore, Custer Park, Crazy Horse Monument, Devil's Tower, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Salt Lake City, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Grand Canyon North Rim, Horseshoe Bend, Sedona, and Phoenix. It was sort of a "if we're ever going to do this, we'd better do it now" kind of trip--age is catching up to us.

I hear you on that. I'd like to do the same thing before time won't allow us to.

Thanks, Mike. Apparently, according to some comments, if one is there in the morning at the right time of the year, they're all in the sun.
