Because they want to!! I don't because I don't have any expensive equipment to carry, but would if I had some.

What is it that you guys gain from all of the stuff you drag around as opposed to my new Sony P&S with the advanced electronics? I certainly don't get it, but I'm sure that you are about to bitch at me about the old school stuff.

I liked the camera so well that I bought a second. Let the sentimental technology thoughts fly ... He went that away ===>

Silly Rabbits !! He's a TROLL - - he just rolls a hand grenade under the door - - then runs away laughing. He hasn't been back {and of course - good riddance} since his first post. You might as well talk to a brick wall expecting Tookus to respond to your jibes - - and even if he DID respond - it would ONLY be to drop another inflammatory post and run away again. Cuz THAT'S how Trolls get their Jollies !

So are you saying you believe cameras such as Canon's
5D MK III and 1D X, or Nikon's D 800 do not utilize "advanced electronics", and should be considered "old school stuff" and sentimental technology?!?

No knowledgable, clear thinking individual could possibly make statements like that and hope to be taken seriously.

But to offer an answer to any reasonable portion of your question "Why Do You Drag Around Expensive Photo Gear?"... well a lot depends on what you shoot.

If you mainly shoot kids in the backyard, photos of your pets, vacation snaps, scenics, birthday parties and other similar situations, then a P&S will likely be fine for most of those.

If however you shoot action such as sports or wildlife (as I do) then a P&S is just not going to cut it.

Will your "advanced electronics" little Sony get these shots I've posted here?
Maybe, but probably not.

In any case since you have never posted *any* photos here you have taken recently, we have no way to know if you are any good and know what you are doing, and you are in no position to criticize other photographer's choice in gear.

I actually wish my red line/white lenses didn't have that red line or white (it's actually putty) color. I'd rather blend into the background. (and plus, I have to live up to the reputation of using that glass! LOL) Nonetheless, fine glass is fine glass, no matter how the manufacturer decorates it or designates it (and God knows it can be heavy). I've gotten some nice images from my little pocket Sony/Zeiss P&S as well (this 10x cropped avatar image from Las Vegas for example).... but there's no denying the satisfaction of a well-done photograph from great glass. Case in point: check out SwampGator's remarkable images way back on Pg. 2 of this thread! (I'd have commented on this thread sooner, but I just got back from the Oregon coast. :)

Likely for the same reason you had when you decided that you needed a P&S and not the camera built into your iPhone.

Very well-said. (But you left out "....with the advanced electronics") ) It's a certainty that Ansel Adams or Philip Hyde, et al, wouldn't even own a P&S ("with the advanced electronics" ) if they were still alive.

That's why ya just gotta love the Hog - - even in a thread started by a Twit Troll - we still manage to make the best of it.

LOL......some GREAT responses. I'm STILL reading them all, and I'm gonna save this thread. But dammit, how do we get a response from MTShooter when he's likely out actually making photographs?! (By the way, if Ansel or Philip DID own a P&S camera, they'd surely be able to coax splendid images from it!)

I see a whole lot of arrogance and ignorance all wrapped up in this post. Drop off your high horse thus getting your head out of the crowds so you can see the clarity of your miss guided view of great photos taken with not so fantastically expansive and advertised equipment.

This thread has been interesting (despite the occasional rudeness) and, as usual, I've learned something. I have what I believe would be called a bridge camera ?? – a term I hadn't heard before joining this forum. It's a Fujifilm S700 which gives one a choice of manual settings or p&s. In a visit to Nevada's Lehman Cave with only dim lighting, I put it on the "museum" setting. The camera was handheld because we couldn't use tripods, and I felt that a flash was inconsiderate of others in the group. This shot has been slightly sharpened in Photoshop, but otherwise nothing has been done to it.
A high-end camera can do things you can't do with a p&s, but that doesn't mean that you can't get nice images within the capabilities of the p&s. A good lens and a good eye are still more important than anything else.
