I am wanting to purchase a camera for landscape photography and at times kids and dogs. I know nothing about the cameras but am eager to learn. Taking pictures is my passion. I need recommendations on what camera to purchase. I have been looking at Nikon Mirrorless, what do you think? My son says Cannon.

Listen to your son!
And WELCOME to our forum!
There are many excellent cameras out there, and they all work well. That said, it all comes down to Excellent Customer Service, if you are unlucky enough to encounter a problem.
So... another vote for Canon. 👍

Most will promote the brand they are using.
Find a good local camera shop. Have them explain the opperation.
See which feels better to you.
Both Canon and Nikon mirrorless are not good choice. Check out the Olympus. Sony and Fuji make good mirrorless too.
Go with your son's recommendation... A) I have used Canon since 1970 and never disappointed. B) at least he'll be on your side when you ask what went wrong...)
Thank you all for your advice!

For a mirror less camera I would not buy a Nikon yet, they are way behind the curve. I'm a longtime Canon user, but in my opinion Canon is catching up, but still behind the curve. They have several new models in the pipeline, but both the M5 and M6 are decent enough for now.
Do look at other brands recommended (Sony, Panasonic, Fuji, Olympus, etc.)
There are lots of things to consider, cost, size, weight, quality, and of course what are your own expectations today and going forwards. Also, is a mirror less the best format or would a bridge camera be a better choice for you?
How much time, effort, and money do you want to put into this?

What kind of experience do you have? What is tor budget? Why does your son say Canon? Does he use a Canon? What kind of a photographer is he? Too many questions, no answers. We need that info to make intelligent suggestions. Welcome to the Hog
Because it isn’t easy to recommend when we have very few facts, you should go to a real camera store. Nothing more beneficial than handling the cameras. Good luck and btw all the cameras that are available today where you can replace the lens are very good. You want Lo be the weak point. Also, getting quality lenses should be a priority. While there is nothing wrong with kit lenses, there is a very big difference between kit lenses and high end lenses.
For your level and the uses you describe, any newer camera can give you great results. However, Canon and Nikon are both dead ends in the mirrorless world. The best value point right now is the Sony A6000. As we get close to the Holidays you will probably be able to get an A6000 with 16-50 and 55 -210 package for about $700. Can't beat that.

To say that "Canon and Nikon are both dead ends in the mirror less world" is somewhat of an over reach and shows a myopic viewpoint. Certainly for buying now or in the imminent future I wouldn't go with either Nikon or Canon, but I wouldn't buy any mirror less camera yet. Both Nikon and Canon are investing quite heavily in mirror less systems, Canon appears to be ahead of Nikon currently, but in two or so years the market landscape may be very different. Several vendors have excellent mirror less products right now, if mirror less is the way to go, but this is a market in transition, and much may change in the next five years.
The OP needs to supply more information. He might as well posed the question, "I'm looking for a new vehicle, what car should I buy?"
