Mark:someone has suggested Winterthur.
If you are in the northern part of DE, go a little further north to visit Longwood Gardens (PA) and the town of Kennett Square (heart of mushroom country). A fine dining restaurant there is Portobello. A good place to stay between Longwood & Winterthur is the Inn at Mendenhall.

The mosquitoes have subsided pretty much at Bombay Hook now that the nights have cooled off. Like most places, early is better. A lot of shooting is done from the car, so a beanbag is helpful. If you think you might want to get closer to eye level with ducks and such bring a cushion to sit on.

Good Luck

easy, get on RT 9 ( in Del not rt 9 in NJ ) Start with Delaware city, towns quiet, some great shots, you can walk along the docks and shoot the boats, and shoot the FORT which is out tn the bay ( for got its name sorry but you'll see it. ) Then dupont start park, I believe they have a nature center there and you can drive along the beach for lots of great shots. Next going south is the augustine wild life areas, Not a lot of roads going thru there , very rural and if I remember right a dirt road that normal cars just cant handle. Then on to bombay hook , if u bought a Senior pass, you can use it here. Then pick up rt 1, Then to Bowers beach , you can park and walk onto the beach, Also inland is kiltten ???? pond something like that usually a lot of birds there. Then continue south there is one more park along the water then u hit Lewis, you can walk the beach there, a few little stores, goshoot thecoast guard boat moored there , go over and shoot the Ferry coming and going. Once your happy with delaware and your in Lewis, plug St Michaels into your GPS ( in MD ) quaint little town and all the sailboaters go there. They also have a museum..... now its time to start heading towards home.... Wanna shoot some eagles? Lots of eagles? From St michaels rt 50 to rt 301 to 40 south . to 272 in Northeast Md ( visit north east cute town lots of little stores for the misses to explore and sea food , you will want Woodies right on main, Lots of people from NJgo there for dinner... nice spot. ) you can stay on 272 all the way to the end and then walk about 1/4 mile to the light house.( park in the dirt lot) You will be able to see, North East river, Chesapeake bay, Sassafras river Elk river and susquehanna river all come together right about there. Your way up on a bluff.

Ok turn around follow 272 to RT 1 in PA. Take rt 1 south , till you come to and go over the dam, its the susquehanna again. Once over the dam. Make the first left on to shoreville rd, then again the next left ( really sharp left) on to shores landing and follow to the parking lot, there may be 10 to 200 people with cameras shooting eagles. This time of year is the best Ive seen as many as 30 eagles there. Now times up, your tired, take rt 1 north and go home. As you can tell ive explored this area a lot...

Mark: almost forgot about this: if you get to Kennett Square and if you like ice cream, look for La Michoacana, 231 State St. They have unusual but good flavors: Corn, avocado, as well as 'normal' flavors

Hi All,

I'd like to visit Delaware for 2 or 3 days, stay over and visit some historic and wildlife opportunities.
I'd appreciate suggestions for fresh fish and other quality eating venues, sites for wildlife and photo ops. My wife also loves to do birding.

I've driven through Delaware 100+ times (via I 95 north & south) but never stopped.
I live in NJ so the drive is easy. I have, many years ago, taken the Lewes/Cape May Ferry, but never really stopped to tour.

Thanks for your time and suggestions. I have used Google, but am looking for more informed suggestions and experienced visits.

Take the ferry into Lewes and turn left when you exit the ferry parking lot. You’ll run right into Cape Henlopen State Park. Drive to the point and hike or bike a short way to Gordon’s Pond. I’ve never been there outside of summer months, but you’re sure to find a vast variety of birds there.

Hi, Mark
Most of the info you've been given is spot on, however, I have some suggestions for places to go to and get a great meal.
Some of my favorite restaurants are on Rte 1 (Coastal Highway) in Rehoboth Beach. I have a 2nd home there and have been exploring the eating spots for 4 years now. All of the listed restaurants has great seafood, so here goes:
1- Big Fish
2- Blue Coast (relatively new, but oh so good) beautiful decor.
3- Fins (large selection of oysters and their own on-site brewery)
The list is not in any particular order. They're all excellent and we go as often as possible. Have always gotten excellent meals at them.
Let us know about your trip, Mark, and your dining experiences.
Let me know the dates you'll be there and maybe we'll be in the area at the same time.

Thank you, Tom. I've made a note of the restaurants. My hip issues may discourage the trip, but if we do go, I'll let you know.

Since you know the Cape May -Lewis Ferry...try Lewis, Delaware. Cape Henlopen is right there as you get off the Ferry - good for birding and photos and Lewis is just full of great spots to eat and photograph.
Don't for get your home state. "Reeds Beach", on the Bay side is one of the premier birding areas.

Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes. You could stop in Cape May and catch the Hawks at the Lighthouse then take the ferry the Lewes. It is hawk migration right now. Later in November the water fowl will be plentiful in most of the places previously mentioned..
