D850 TIFF's are Huuuuuuuuuuuuu......
Try downloading, for free, the DNG converter from Photoshop. That file format is read by older versions of Photoshop and Elements and it will convert the XQD - NEF format to one that can be read.
Also, the D850 will allow you to choose a smaller file size.

The updated CC opens my D-850 NEF files in both Lightroom and Photoshop 😎
I just checked. I have the absolute latest versions as I have LrCC, and the current version does NOT work when using Lr. One can import into Ps and convert to DNG for Lr, but Lr will not import directly.

What is the tradeoff - what do you lose when you gain a smaller file size??

Funny, I have been able to open and process my D850 .nef files since the day I got it on September 11th.
Adobe updated their ACR in August 2 weeks ahead of the D850 release. Haven't tried it in Lightroom as I never have any use for the program.

Sharpness, clarity, detail and dynamic range. The biggest loss is a file less able to work with.

Well, if it works in ACR (Photoshop) then it works in LR since they use the same engine. But Oddjobber uses PSE and PSE doesn't do many updates. They usually make you wait till the next version they sell and then it will have all the current camera makes and models in it's somewhat skimpy version of ACR.

Jeep_daddy, I have seen a couple of posts now they say Lightroom doesn't have a direct link yet for the D850. I know that's weird but, it seems to be a fact.

Absolutely doesn't work for Lightroom, period. I only wish I was making this up. Soon, I hope.

It is a fact, as of yesterday.
Of course in time Adobe will update LR to accommodate the new NEF formats. Hurry up and wait.

I installed Elements 2018 yesterday (30-day free trial). It was released just a week ago and no D850 support, so we'll be waiting at least another year.

Does Nikon provide software that would allows you to do something with the file??

The D850 compatibility will probably come via an update rather than an upgrade - and sooner than 2019
.

Don't believe so. View NX2 doesn't do it and D850 "what's in the box" doesn't mention any software.

Elements does not do updates. You have to buy the whole program again, with no discount for owning previous versions.
