This is my first topic since I joined. I just posted in the new member section introducing myself. My current equipment is a new Nikon D500 with Nikon 17-55 2.8, 80-200 2.8 and 55-300 4.5-5.6. I am retired and are spending more time pursuing my hobby of pictures. Mainly been shooting sports (football, baseball, tennis, band and color guard) and family/kids/grand kids pictures but now venturing into landscapes and first time into Micro for flowers and other close-up items . I would like some recommendation on micro lenses as this is a new area for me. I have done some research and talked with a few and one lenses recommended was the Nikon 105 2.8 Micro. Any thoughts on this one or others. Thanks for your help.

Best Nikon macro products ever ! ! ! price : use $1.300.00, Nikon AF Micro-NIKKOR 200mm f/4 D IF-ED Lens , price for a new $ 1.750.00 , it's not cheap but is worth every penny.

Rent : Nikon 200mm f/4D AF Micro ED | Nikon Lenses $ 80.00 / 7d.

You might look at the Nikkor 200mm macro while a bit slower and more expensive, its a very sharp lens and it gives you more working room , you don't have to be so close to your subject.
I have been using this lens over 10 years now and I'm more than happy with it.

The Nikon 105 2.8 Micro is one of the finest micro lenses produced. Here is my other favorite, it is always in my bag.

Nathan I have and cherish the Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D Macro Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D for it's light weight and optical excellence... Currently this is likely your best value/worth "Macro" for the D500 DX crop body...

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/393446-REG/Tokina_ATXAF100PRON_100mm_f_2_8_AT_X_M100.html

This is an excellent portrait lens also on a DX crop body especially since it's f/2.8...
Certainly as fast as it's rivals and half the price...

That said, if you are doing serious commercial work then the AF 200mm f/4D IF ED is hands down your best choice... For beauty work this lens is unsurpassed in my humble estimation... However it is pricey however can be had as a previously owned from KEH at considerable savings...

As for Extension Tubes? If you have a 50mm prime they will get you there... And are the most cost effective route into macro/micro...

Hope this helps or is at least food for thought...
I wish you well on your journey Nathan...

Nathan specified closeups, and I won’t hijack his thread by getting into 1:1 macro. My tests with primes and zooms show that whatever I.Q. the lens displays at its closest focus, there will be virtually no discernible loss to at least 1:2 with extension tubes or bellows. Anyone who doubts it can test for themselves. Of course, I’m talking about three-dimensional subjects - flat copy is a different animal.

Thanks for your last 2 posts RWR, they confirm things I suspected, but have not tried. An extension tube doesn't take up much room in a camera bag. For the more casual user, I'm sure you have made a major point.

If you own a Nikon camera I believe you should go with a Nikon Micro Nikkor lens. All of the Micro lenses Nikon has made are of excellent quality. I use a Micro 105 f4 from the 70's and I consider it a very sharp lens.
Another company that has an excellent macro lens is Tamron and I am talking about the 90mm f2.8.
By the way, all of these macro lenses double as an excellent portrait lens.

Check out the Sigma 150mm 2.8. The older model is actually equal to or better than the newer model w/ OS. Can be bought for ~ $ 500

You really need to go to the "True Macro " forum here on UHH. As noted before, most any true macro lens will give you good results. It's more about proper technique than the gear used. Yes, you can get close up images & true 1:1 life size images with other than a true macro lens, but there are limitations. Since you own the D500, you can even use the older Nikon mount manual focus lenses & still get metering if you so desire. As for AF & VR, they become all but useless the closer you get to lifesize anyway & unless you want to use the lens for other than macro images, they are not needed. The sample I am attaching was taken with my Nikon D7100 with a 105mm F2.8 Lester Dine macro. This is a manual focus lens from the mid 1980's. Just goes to show you that you don't need to spend big bucks on gear...The subject is a Long Tailed Skipper butterfly I spotted on my Butterfly Bush the other day here in North Georgia. If you click on the "download" link, it will open a new, larger image.

If you into macro photography check out this video. We watched it this week at photo club. It shows macro photography at it's extreme. If your not a macro photographer just the pure resolution of Levon's photos will blow you away. 8 to 10,000 photos in one stack.

Stacking is not for everyone though.
